Hallmark® Robert Klaas Whittler - Tobacco Bone

Here's the deal … I need to buy a knife from A.G. Russell. Specifically .. a Woodswalker. I lost my first one. That's right .. lost it. Can't believe it ..but.. there it is. I lost it. I used it last week-end .. couldn't find it for work on Mon. Must have been when running the kids (canine children) ..because.. I've searched the car & house .. top to btm. 'tis not to be found.

Worst / best thing about it ..is.. I really liked that knife. Used it on a daily basis & was extremely happy with it's performance. Obviously .. I'm going to replace it. Thing is .. I just despise paying 2/3 of the cost of the knife for shipping. SO0oo .. I need to find something else to add to the order so I can stop beating myself up for paying $8 in shipping for a $12.95 knife.

I know going into it .. the blade steel is 440A tempered to a 56 +/- 1 HRC. I'm sure it will take a keen edge ..but.. it won't hold it for long.

All things being relative, i.e. my std daily fare is a Queen #06L w/ PHD2 blade steel, an A.G. Russell Medium Barlow Lockback with 8Cr13MoV tempered to a 58 +/- 1 HRC, a small leverlock with X160CrMoV121 blade steel <chinese equivalent of D2> tempered to a 60 +/- 1 HRC, and now an A.G. Russell Hunter Scalpel with AUS-10 tempered to a 59.5 +/- 0.5 HRC replacing the lost Wooodswalker in AUS-8 tempered to a 58 +/- 1 HRC.

I know it's 440A tempered to a 56 +/- 1 HRC ...but... I have a real soft spot for lock-back whittlers. The saving grace is .. I probably will not be actively using it.

SO0oo .. the question is .. “Does anyone out there have one ??”

Specifically .. I'm interested in the fit-n-finish & the build quality. Is it a “good build” .. is it a solid build. What do you think of the fit-n-finish. I'm interested in the views / opinions of anyone who owns one. This is an on-line order for me ..hence.. no hands on. SO0o .. am very interested in your “hands on” opinions.

I have not been hands on with one but I will see if there is one at Blade that I can put my hands on :)

I purchased the Woodswalker & the Hunter Scalpel @ the same time. I needed a straight knife for cutting cardboard in the work environment ..therefor.. required something small enough to not be intimidating & I wanted a thin blade (they cut through cardboard better than the thicker blades .. of the Barlow or the Teardrop or the leverlock) ..AND.. I wanted something hard enough that I wouldn't be sharpening it .. EVERY night.

Both the Woodswalker & the Hunter Scalpel met those criteria .. per their stated specs. Since the Hunter Scalpel's blade steel is AUS-10 tempered to a 59.5 +/- 0.5 HRC & the Woodswalker is AUS-8 tempered to a 58 +/- 1 HRC .. I expected the Hunter Scalpel would come out on top ..but.. found just the opposite. In the real world, the Woodswalker held the better edge.

Anyway .. I just despise paying $8 in shipping for a $12.95 knife.The Klaas lockback whittler would end up in the drawer with my other whittlers ..&.. lessen the guilt relative to the shipping cost. I just don't want to spend the requisite $23.95 only to receive a glorified "Steel Warrior" lock back whittler. If you get a chance to handle one .. that'd be great.

The AG Russell Woodswalker was hiding in my kitchen apron.

I've only lost one knife in my life .. my first one .. the one my Dad got me for my 6th birthday. It was an Imperial mini stockman. It lasted about 4 hrs.

I was so proud of it .. I didn't trust it to my pocket .. had to carry it in my hand. Which I promptly lost when I lost my footing & slid down the bank while rounding up the cows.
