Based on these pictures, I am convinced the coyote was trying to stalk the deer.  It is a small deer, probably a last year's fawn.  Notice the time stamps on the pics.  The camera is set to take three rapid fire pics each time it is tripped.  Also there is only a ten second delay between trips.  So the whole sequence took place in a minute, probably less than 30 seconds.  

I think the coyote was trying to sneak up on the deer in the tall grass.  Notice the grass is taller than the coyote.  Probably the deer heard the coyote in the grass instead of smelling it.  The coyote would have been approaching the deer from down wind.

BTW this camera is a Moultrie that I got at Academy Sports for $40.  It is 8 mega pixels.
