Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

I am researching my next knife article.  The article will be about unconventional combat knives.  I just finished and shipped out an article about Spyderco's Warrior which was designed by Guy Rafaeli who is an expert martial artist who lives in Israel.  Rafaeli teaches knife fighting to the SF of the Israel Defense Forces.  His rendition of the Warrior is made for only one thing….taking out bad guys nose to nose and toes to toes.  Check out the Warrior on Spyderco’s web site.  http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=444

When I say unconventional combat knife I mean the knife is non-typical in design but is designed for combat.  The combat knife is used for many tasks as a tool more so than as a weapon.  The article should be interesting to research and write.  It will be out after the first of the year in Knives Illustrated.  You all be safe and remember…..cut long deep and continuous.

It will be interesting to see what your team thinks also.  Practice seems to be the word.  Avoiding the situation where you are surprised trying to extract the knife means the roll would have to become second nature when using this knife

Jan and Rick....

I received my Back Bite this afternoon.  In the package along with the knife was one of their tee-shirts which I requested.  I sometimes use the tee-shirt for a background for the photo shoot of the related knife.  I am meeting up with my evaluation team early next week to look over the various samples which will be used in this article.

In a preliminary inspection of the Back Bite I can see it is about the right size for direct contact (hand to hand).  The concave section of the blade is well placed.  My sample of the Back Bite concave edge was not as sharp as I like my weapons.  I sharpened the sample to my liking.

I can perceive a problem if one was to shove the blade into a ribcage.  The wedge blade would part the ribs and shoot on in.  The parted ribs could then snap back together locking the Back Bite into the rub cage.  I guess if you were ready for this event you would know to roll the knife over and extract it.  I have found when you’re in a nose to nose and toes to toes direct combat fight, things are passing by at a millisecond rate.  To get through this you must practice and practice so muscle memory will take over when unexpected things happen.  They ALWARYS do.  I will keep you in the loop.

Rick....

Thanks for your kind words.  When the Back Bite comes in I will give it a good going over and have my two buddies do the same.  It will then be put into my article which will come out after the first of the year.  I will let all know when the magazine with this article hits the stands.

Rick...

Thanks again for the information.  I checked out the knives and web sites.  There were some interesting knives but I have what I need once I receive the Back Bit...this coming Monday.

I noticed the Specwog web site talks about firearms and carrying firearms concealed.  Shows gun fighting techniques.  If you want gun fighting techniques then one needs to come to the USA where we have been gun fighting for over 200 years.  In Oklahoma, where I am…at this moment….to be a certified police firearms instructor you have to go through 6 weeks of training.  To get into the course you have to shoot master scores.  This is the toughest certification in the USA, therefore the world.  This means Oklahoma has the finest firearms instructors and gun fighters in the World.

Adventurous young men who train in the martial arts and espier to get into the body guard or PSD business don’t have to go to Europe or Israel to find training there are several excellent schools here.  I have traveled the World and worked with 48 different law enforcement agencies from 48 countries in an area where none of us were liked….and hands down the cops from the USA were better trained and the most aggressive.  Ooops!  My made in the USA pride just bled through.  Anyway Rick thanks for the help.

Don...

Interesting looking knife.  The price was $475.oo USD.  You can get the Spyderco Warrior (direct contact knife) for around $230.00 USD and the Pro-Tech Brend #1 Combat knife around $290.00 USD.  I have both and when I return to overseas duty I will make room for both.

It is my professional experience and opinion any combat or direct contact knife with a blade length of over five inches is a waste and too heavy.  If you save the added weight you can carry one more mag of 5.56.

For a combat knife which is commercially produced but is almost custom made...the Brend #1 is a fantastic knife.  If you collect combat knives then the Pro-Tech Brend #1 is a must have.  They are not mass produced making them a future must have collector and a future investment.

Rick....

I appreciate you tip on the TOPS brand and in particular the Back Bite.  I visited their web site and checked out the Back Bite.  Yes this knife falls within the unconventional combat knife group.  Thanks for the tip.

Steve...

I greatly appreciate your information and comments.  I had to do some digging but I found some photos of the Nichol's knives.  I have heard about the knives as I grew up in Kansas but never saw one.  The prices these knives bring were and are outside of this farm boy's pay grade.  I would love to have a current picture for my pending article from a very lucky owner of one of the Nichols combat knife.

In looking over the few pictures I found I would say Nichol's combat knives would fall just inside of the conventional side.  His knife design shows influence from the Southwest and Mexican designs.....throwing in a little of Jim Bowie for good measures.  Your information is very informative and greatly appreciated.  If you happen to know of anyone who have one of these knives I would like to hear from them.  Thanks again Steve.
