Steve,

It is fortunate for us that we can choose to own and collect as many or as few knife patterns as we wish. I am thankful that I have this option since I tend to like all knives. The trapper is nearly a work of art and while it is possible that there is a knife company that doesn't make a trapper, I can't seem to think of one.

Since both the trapper and the stockman are purpose built knives, as collectors, we need to go beyond the purpose of the knife and look at why we collect. Although some people collect because they believe their knives will go up in value and they will make a profit, most of us, I believe, collect because we see the intrinsic beauty and utility in what may have been the first real tool that man created and used.

I am neither a trapper nor a stockman (farmer/rancher) and although I have a few of each of these knives, I don't carry either. I think I have nearly a dozen R1128s.
