Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

Hello my name is Aaron. New to the site. Looks great by the way. My uncle collected buck/case knives when I was a kid. He has since passed away some 20 yrs ago and while I still have a few knives he gave me I haven't really gotten into like I would have hoped after he passed away.. Work/marriage/etc seems to keep things directed away from some hobbies. :(  Fishing is about all I can do with what little free time I do have..

Anyway the other day purchased a several boxes of fishing stuff at a rummage sale. Didn't really look thru the boxes real close. What I could see on the top of them was more than worth the $25 that the lady wanted.

When I got them home much to my surprise I found alot of new in the box fishing lures and a buck knife.

It's in a wood box with a certificate. Looks to never have been used.. I did feel bad and did try to take it back to the lady that had the rummage. She said she had never seen it and said to keep it.. I again offered it and she insisted to keep it..

Great American Collection

"Deer Country"

846 out of 5000

846 is stamped on the blade also.

I googled and found very little actually. I did find one post where someone said they didn't finish the run of 5000.. something about there was supposed to be 5 different scenes and they only did the deer and and eagle.. between the 2 of them they made about 5000.. couldn't confirm that either..

Any info would be great. I included a pic below.

Thanks Aaron

Aaron-These knives were made by the Buck Custom Shop USA around 1983-1985 depending on the source (most say late 1984-1985) .According to J. Bruce Voyles' book " International Blade Collectors Association Price Guide To Commemorative Knives" there were 1500 made in the "Deer Country" pattern in 1983 and sold for $125 back then. From what I can find out these were made for  Great American Buckle Company of Chicago who provided the pewter inlay. The blades are mirror polished 425 HC steel. You are correct that there were only 5000 made between the Eagle and Deer Country patterns, and if my resource guide is correct, your Deer Country is the rarer of the 2 with 1500 made.Last year a "Deer Country" knife sold for $175 on Ebay, and this year the Eagle pattern  sold for $250 !! In short, a heck of a deal for $25---Here are a couple more pics I found so everyone can see what a beauty this knife is--

Thank you for the info. I guess some of what I found was correct.

The knife was a nice surprise in the box. I guess I have my rummage sale story now. While its not worth a mint, I do feel the lady wouldn't have left it in the box if she had found it. I tried to give it back to her and she refused. I'm really torn on keeping it actually. I feel like I really shouldn't have it. I may just sell it and donate the money to a local kids charity here.

Anyway thanks again for info. I really like the site. I was talking to my wife about the knife and told her I found this neat site. First words out of her mouth was and I quote, "I will email the site admin and have you banned if you start buying things or collecting knives like your uncle."

I love my wife, but sometimes I should just keep my mouth shut.. :P

ROFL, please dont tell her I am the biggest enabler here !

Congrats on the knife, enjoy it for a while.  When your ready let me know, there is a charity that accepts knives.  They do a great job of getting some disabled kids and adults outdoors and doing things together.  Knives are how they support the charity The door in the wall

Thanks Jan.

Actually finding this site because of the knife has renewed my interest in knives. My uncle had hundreds of knives when he passed. I was just a teen and really enjoyed my time spent roaming around to shows/sales/rummages looking for that stuff. That's been well over 20 yrs ago. Life got busy and never really got back into it. :(

I do like the idea of that charity. I'm going to try to contact the lady again that had the rummage. I really just think she should know the who/what of the knife. It just feels wrong to have it. I'm sure she would have taken it out of the box if she knew it was in there.

Thanks

Aaron

Nice gesture, Aaron! Always nice to see honest and moral folks that do the right thing. Congrats on your yard sale find and story. And be careful...we can get you in lots of trouble with the wife...lol. We are all enablers and addicts here, and love every second of it. At the very least, stick around and learn more about our hobby. We'll try not to get you in too much hot water!
