Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

I'm not trying to slander or insult anybody, and am very new to collecting old switchblades. And am asking a question of you members who have more experience than me.

This knife at auction on Sharperdeals looks like it has a replacement blade, just looking at the rest of the knife the main blade doesn't seem to match in shape or quality of steel, and is not stamped. It looks to me like a plain blade from an Italian switch. It's the lack of patina and stamping is curious no?

Also the blade pin would be ground down to meet the bolster no? this one isn't.

Sorry again if I'm stepping on any toes.

The knife in question is mine and the main blade may have been replaced, or just cleaned which is a for sure as far as I'm concerned. Cleaned blades just don't have patina, and even the pen blade doesn't have much for being about 160 years old, nor does the backspring or inside of the knife. It is not from an Italian stiletto if it was indeed replaced as there would be no way to make one fit. You can't even take a blade from one Italian and use it in another in most cases. As far as the pivot being ground down I doubt it would be flush, the rear ones are not and I can just about guarantee they are original and untouched.

Thank you very much.

Again I wasn't trying to lander or insult and hope you don't feel that way.

I used to collect Zippos and for the starting collector knowing what what is really important. Even more so with vintage and antique knives. The forum I belonged to had a section for asking this kind of question.

Below is a link to the kind of stuff I mean about fakes and Zippo's. The whole site is about Vietnam war Zippo's  and is amazing,  one collector. The section below just about fakes.
Good luck with your auction.

LOL!  There are missing parts, the secondary blade lost its tip and they filed an angle point and it does look like a modern Italian blade was used a a replacement.  Sloppy job to boot.  In mint shape with all the right parts it might sell for $900.  Good eye J.

sloopy job ..AGREE!

i can only see only the thumbnail... if someone can produce a larger picture that would be great...THIS IS THE EXACT REASON i posted about starting a "FAKE KNIFE THREAD"-thats a perm sticky...on main page even or whatever....FAKE KNIVES ARE A PLAGUE  ON OUR GOOD HOBBY!!!!...and hurt custom makers and production companies both!!!

in a FKAE KNIFE THREAD.... folks can come and ask...not be afirad to be judged for asking..not have to do all the explaining about toe stepping...and understand its not a thread about being mean....or nice...or anything...just straight up just about READING THE KNIFE and READING WHATS WRONGor also RIGHT!!!

i say RIGHT!!--because its awesome to find that bargain...take the chance...post pics and find out your gut was right and everything is A-OK!

WITH THE KNIFE DISCUSSED HERE...

well even with seeing just the thumbnail i can tell you the knife is not right... and a knife of that quality...from that era...the pins would be flush..they may be iron{always possible} and you can see them but they would be flush

hey J good job...dont ever be worried about asking about a knife.its your hard earned money.you dont wanna buy parts knives...or if ya do you dont wanna buy a 1200$ parts knife im guessing!...lol.seriouslyyou have no reason at all to explain yourself..and no need....

like i always say... BUY BOOKS,THEN LEARN,THEN BUY KNIVES.   if you want...if your an ebayer...message me and ill give you a list of 4 known fake knifers...thats a start... when i say known.. i mean ...proven fakes knifemakers. its just like the ZIPPO fakes above....fake knifemakeers are getting better and better...some make their own dies even now!....  and now ...i have just seen CASEknives new release...they are gonna start stamping on their tangs ,their original old stamps as part of a series...fake knife makers will just cut the blade and weld another right to the tang stamp, add a few scratches...let sit outside to gather some kind of patina...maybe even stuff some pocket lint in the well of the knife ..just for that added fake touch!..  also once you know the fake ebayers...te best is seeing them actually buy a "lot" of knives...then 3 weeks later 4 knives out of that same loty are now somehow MIN NEW OLD STOCK!...LOL...im so tired of the "hey look we found another whole garage or basement filled with 1000 case classics! ...its a little old lady who wants me to list them so i will be over the next few months!...."oh and i know nothing about knives, even though i have been selling them for 7 years,so no returns"...the intentional I KNOW NOTHING so if anything is wrong it =s not me!

Thanks,

Waiting for my first knife, a Press Button Invinicble. I bought it from Mark Erickson, who wrote a history of American Switchblades.

Congratulations on your new Press Button.  I mainly collect "Press Button Knife Co." along with a few early Schrade Cut and Flylock knives. Here is a picture of some mine. The Invincible knives can be found with a few different blade grinds such as Clip,Spear and Sabre. They can also be found with a few different tang stamps besides "Press Button Knife Co. NY" such as "Walden Knife Co.  NY"   and a few other  names that were contracted or no name at all and just a Pat # .They were originally etched on the blade "Invincible" but other etches have also been found on examples  .  They were offered also scaled in Ebony and real Mother of Pearl .  Very nice choice for a first knife. Hope you post pictures once you receive it.

Wayne,

Wow you have some very nice knives, the one armed knife and that little jugged bone single blade(?) middle right hand side caught my eye. But they're all so nice.

I've wanted an Invincible for awhile now, really looking forward to it and the copy of Marks book that I bought. Will post as soon as I can.

Have you ever seen any of the printed promo material for Press Button? The link below is a short interview/history of Press Button and Shrade, but the collector has this cool little catalog/book. On the cover is a pic of a hand and the knife and it reads 'Press The Button'

Your invincible still has etch too, nice.

Myron Tupa offers a reproduction of that catalog  along with the cool little display that shows many the examples offered .  He is out the country right now but Jerry Skelton I think has a few copies . My "The Victor"  has more of a better etch then my "Invincible but guess it did'nt show up as good in that picture.  The little bone example is a double blade 2 7/8" . The only single blade 2 7/8" I know of is the "High School Girl" and I think they were only offered in celluloid tortoise . The only celluloid knife I own in my collection is a 3 3/8" Press Button with safeties but I would love to ad a "high School Girl".  I'm just not very big on celluloid knives.
