You would often hear me say...go out and post on the site guys. Well be careful what you ask for right? Now we have posting going on in many of the groups but the chat is it's busiest on a Wednesday night when Gus Marsh is in there helping us learn about the companies and history of our hobby.

Now that is not a bad thing, many of us from the Wed night chats spend time before and after checkin out whats been happening and can this or that person help us find something. I guess we have the best of both worlds now.

One of the regular members in the Wednesday Night chats is Russ. A few members here and there have been the recipients of a surprise package from Russ when he was clearing out some knives from his collection. This week Russ surprised a few of us with some of his own companies creations. Anglesey Knives

Some of you may remember that as the Covid came on a stranger came to my home and gifted me a knife A sharp gift, a penny and a virus

While no longer a stranger, Russ made a visit back to my home this week after asking me if he could gift to 3 of our Wed Night Chat crew and would I get him the addresses. I got the addresses, he mailed out and he also dropped one by my house. Yet again I was denied the opportunity to provide him with a penny for my sharp gift but we are local so I can make that up soon.

Thank you Russ, for being a member of iKC, a friend and a generous soul !

Greetings members!

For a while now, Jan and I have been discussing us trying to form a set of resources that can be used to research the knives and answer the questions of our members. As many of you may recall, we had John McCain as our go-to guy for info before his passing. While many members do pitch in to answer people's questions, sometimes it is just beyond us. Thus, I have started to try to gather resources on knives that will be used for iKC research. Now, we thought about trying to buy books for this, but after looking up the prices for new books, we found that gathering enough to be functional will either take a great deal of time, or a prohibitive amount of money. So I have decided to try something a little different.

We would like to appeal to our members, and ask you all whether or not you may have *any* knife books, guides, catalogues or other resources that may be collecting dust, or socked away in a box somewhere that you are not using and would care to pass along. Any and all donations would be greatly appreciated, and would go toward building The John McCain Memorial Library and Research Center! The Library would be there for any questions our members may have, new or old. I am the first to admit that I don't hold a candle to the knowledge John shared with us, but as I work from home, I am willing to try my best to keep our Q&A section going strong.

Now...some sites ask for a membership fee, others require payment to get answers to your questions. Jan and I both agree that this is not a direction we want to go. Also, research takes time and patience, and sometimes online resources just aren't enough. As I live in a small town in Canada, finding specific books is quite difficult, especially not having a knife store or knife shows locally. Also, many companies will not send catalogues up North without an exorbitant amount of shipping. So we ask you, our members and family, for any donations and help you may be able to provide, so they can be used for the iKC Community.

I am still fleshing out the idea, and we will have two options for shipping addresses to try to keep mailing costs down. I will also start and maintain a Library Group for research requests, as well as what books and other resources we have available and whom they were donated by. This way we will all know what iKC has available as well as knowing what we need. John Kellogg has already started us off with a generous donation of 5 books to officially start the Library, and I have been collectiong some digital resources such as magazine and the like

So, there you go. An iKC Library of resources dedicated to John McCain with content donated by our community to make our site more helpful to those with questions about our fantastic hobby! You can email or message either Jan Carter or myself (addresses at the bottom left of the main page) regarding donations and we'll let you know the best way to go. So...check your shelves or book boxes, keep an eye on the bookstore bargain bins, check with friends, order an extra free catalogue from your favourite knife company and help us make our community even better! Who knows? It may be you that the Library helps to get a better sale value for your knives for sale, or answers that nagging question you have had about a piece in your collection!

Thanks for listening, and do share any ideas you may have to help with this endeavor!
iKC Contests.tag:iknifecollector.com,2017-11-10:3181080:Topic:15056952017-11-10T21:44:12.293ZSteve Scheuerman (Manx)https://iknifecollector.com/profile/SteveScheuerman

Afternoon folks...I have a question for all of you.

So, I ask you, the members, what kinds of contests tickle your fancy? What do you think would get more participation? We would love to hear from you and get your opinions on how we can make our contests more desirable. iKC is all about our members and your suggestions and content make this site what it is! Let's get some ideas rolling on how to make our site a bit more fun!

This week I had the pleasure of completing the transfer of materials between a member and a knife museum, I thought I would share that with you.

Last summer I I contacted Gus Marsh and asked him to look in his fully complete NKCA magazine library for a particular picture I needed to find. Gus was generous enough to go get his books and mail them to me. I found the information I needed in just a few days, but now I had Gus’s entire collection.
Last summer I I contacted Gus Marsh and asked him to look in his fully complete NKCA magazine library for a particular picture I needed to find. Gus was generous enough to go get his books and mail them to me. I found the information I needed in just a few days, but now I had Gus’s entire collection. Turns out Gus had been storing them, so I simply made sure they were safe and stored them myself.

Now you all know that I feel bringing any and all information possible to the knife collecting public is paramount for me. Losing this information to private collectors keeps it viable but does not give researchers or collectors the opportunities I feel we should have.

The Nation Knife Museum has a set of these still in our library and they are housed in Alabama at the Janey Furnace Museum and available in a public reading room. OK, that means the South is covered. Soooo, what to do with this set? How many of you are aware that there are actually more knife museums??

http://www.bermanmuseum.org/pages/?pageID=27

Wawarsing Museum Historical Knife Museum

Cattaraugus Knife Museum at the American Museum of Cutlery

As much as I would like for each of these to have a full set of this overview of knife collecting from the mid 70’s to now, we only had one set. The main concern was who would keep it in stock, not sell it and put it inventory as accessible to research. The Berman and the NRA museums have vast collections and knives are not their primary, they specialize in all types of weapons. It so happens that in being a part of the distribution of the National Knife Museums holdings I had a contact at the American Museum of Cutlery in Cattaraugus. I spoke with my contact and the curator, to make sure that Gus’s collection would honor his passion for being able to research our hobby, and they assured it me it will be.

Pat, the curator stated to me that one of their goals is to be able to grow their library to be the best research facility for cutlery in the nation. This is a huge undertaking and an impressive goal! The museum is run solely on a volunteer basis and is supported not only through donations and grants but by the Village of Cattaraugus itself! Being within the magic circle of knives gives this particular museum some celebrity status in the Village and surrounding area so we decided it was the perfect location to house this information.

I encourage everyone, make one of these museums a destination. A day trip if it is near you or a vacation of it’s own, but visit one soon.

I want to take just a moment to Thank all of those involved in this for allowing me to be a small part of preserving these magazine for us all!
2016 iKC knife offeringtag:iknifecollector.com,2016-06-21:3181080:Topic:14256842016-06-21T15:32:37.574ZJan Carterhttps://iknifecollector.com/profile/JanCarter

My first thought was that it was a misunderstanding. But apparently it is not, Cold Steel has indeed purchased the words.

As early as 3 B.C. the Samurai Sword was used as an offering to the Gods (emperors). There were a lot of problems that faced the smiths in ancient times. Razor sharp would break off against armor and a softer steel would bend. Solution? A softer skin cover or skin over the top of a harder blade steel...hmmmm, let's see what shall I name that, something like 3 piece forging? Translated that becomes san mai.

So, OK...I guess you could trade mark the words, everything without an owner is for sale right? But is it the right thing to do?

If you do trademark it, do you then impose upon the knife world to call something as ancient as SanMai by another name?

So here we are, what do you think of the turn of events AND any suggestions on what we will now call San Mai??
2016 KNIFE CALENDARStag:iknifecollector.com,2015-10-07:3181080:Topic:13602702015-10-07T14:15:49.655ZJan Carterhttps://iknifecollector.com/profile/JanCarter
