Good evening!

Just wanted to share a recent project that I was able to complete within the last few days.

Over the last few months I had been intermittently been working on making a new set of grips for my Ruger Blackhawk (Bisley).

The original ones were stupid white (ivory) plastic ones. They were held together by one screw,

I thought that I could make something better. The ones that I designed utilized 2 screws and I added "ears" to the top of the grips to hook under the frame. These additions should help secure the grips in place much better.

The new grips used nicely figured maple (fiddleback). I initially thought I was going to make the grips full length maple. Most of the way through making them, I decided to cut them down, added a spacer (black vulcanized fiber that I got for knife handles)and a piece of highly figured walnut to the butt of grips; turning them into two-tone grips.

I thought that the end result turned out pretty decent. Not too bad for my first attempt.

Of course there is no way to truly capture the beauty (and almost iridescence) of the wood in a photograph. But without being able to share them with you personally, please enjoy the photo as an approximation.

Thanks for looking!
Introductiontag:iknifecollector.com,2021-04-19:3181080:Topic:16799822021-04-19T03:38:10.479ZAndy Moonhttps://iknifecollector.com/profile/AndyMoon

I was using a fawn in distress call on my caller to try to call up a coyote or bobcat. I was in one of my shooting houses that I hunt deer from. The shooting house is next to a fence along the property line with about a 185 yard open lane in front of it. I spotted something about 100 yards out making its way along the fence toward me and the caller. There is quite a bit of stuff along the fence and it was obviously using it as cover. I spotted something about 100 yards out making its way along the fence toward me and the caller. There is quite a bit of stuff along the fence and it was obviously using it as cover. When it got a little closer I could see it was a raccoon and a big one. It continued working its way along the fence all the way to the caller. The caller was on the ground in front of the shooting house. When the raccoon got close to the caller I stood up so I could see it. The raccoon then saw me and left. I got to thinking about it and wondered if raccoons would kill fawns. I did some research when I got home and found that they would. Now I wish I had killed the raccoon.

About a week later I was back out there. As I was coming out of the woods, I spotted this dog with this baby fawn in its mouth. By the time I had caught up with the dog it had laid the fawn down. When I picked up the fawn i saw that its insides had been completely eaten out. The body was still intact but there wasn't an organ left in its body cavity. I don't believe the dog killed the fawn. I think it just found it. I believe the dog would have torn the body apart. I think a raccoon may have killed it.
Guns Magazine vintage issuestag:iknifecollector.com,2020-07-11:3181080:Topic:16329292020-07-11T23:22:37.449ZAndy Moonhttps://iknifecollector.com/profile/AndyMoon

Next step is to let her shoot her own .380 and get her signed up for the CCW class.
Bobcat with prey in his mouth.tag:iknifecollector.com,2019-11-17:3181080:Topic:16119682019-11-17T05:48:19.493ZAndy Moonhttps://iknifecollector.com/profile/AndyMoon

Well actually I did put him down but he jumped up and ran off. When I went to where he was when I shot him I could find no blood. This mystified me because normally when hit by one of the Remington 150 grain CoreLokt's out of my '06, they bleed profusely and leave an easily followed blood trail if they are able to run. I looked diligently for him but without a blood trail I was just guessing as to where he might be. I couldn't find him so figured he just died somewhere and would be wasted. But then I got this picture on my game camera.

This made it clear what happened. When I shot him he was crossing in front of me about 150 yards out. This is not a difficult shot for me as I have previously killed deer at 150 and at 175 yards. Note the crease in his skull and his right ear. He must have turned his head toward me just as I fired. The bullet apparently went between his antlers creasing his skull and nearly cutting off his right ear. Creasing his skull was most likely what knocked him down. I think I probably gave him a concussion. I now call him Old Lop Ear.

This is what he looks like in the latest picture. He would have lost the antlers in the first picture and is growing new ones now.

I intend to make a concerted effort to get him next season. I would like to make him my first deer. However if I see this fellow before him it will take a lot of will power to let this one walk.

There is another deer that I have named. I call her One Eye. I think she is probably blind in her left eye. I have been getting pictures of her for two years now.
