Politics have become an open subject, tearing apart friends and families and hurricane Harvey brought a nation together.

In the knife world, lawsuits have begun to try to keep fake/clone knives off EBay and a classic knife company partnered with a survivalist company (TOPS & AlMar) to create a best of both worlds knife, the mini SERE.

The UK went all out with a campaign to Save Lives by turning in and destroying knives. Here in the US our Knife Rights and AKTI advocates gave us back switchblades and blades over 3 inches.

Here on iKC we added a classic to our lineup of community knives. We added a good many new members. We prayed for family, members and the world as a whole. While we lost some amazing folks, we also saw some amazing recoveries.

I wish the very best for all of you in 2018. I prayer the recoveries will far outweigh any losses. It is my hope you will all get your “grail” knife and start the search for the next one. The 2018 catalogs are beginning to show up online so check with your favorite manufactures and dealers.

May your families know peace, health and prosperity in 2018. May the mailman never lose a package and your edge never go dull !

Thank you for being a part of iKnifeCollector.com. Come back often, show us your collection and meet a new knife friend!

Many years ago, when GEC was very young, we used to buy knives that were good quality but had a cosmetic flaw. It made us rethink our stand on seconds.

What do you think? If a knife is being purchased as a user and the only flaw in the knife is a double strike on a pin, is it worth paying considerably less?

Lets take a look at what you can find.…

Now I chose only a few and also those marked USA made. I wanted to be sure we were looking at apples to apples. These are good deals.
Each year I take stock of what has happened here on iKC and in the knife world in general. 2016 will not go down as my favorite year, it started out rough with the loss of Terry Ray from TC Collectible Cutlery and was quickly followed by the news that Mrs. Jean Sargent had passed suddenly.

Then we lost Ms Cherry Ray and our own Cajun, Robert Burris, Mr. Clarence Risner, Howard P Reynolds, Bob Robinson's wife, Bob Andrews of Old Hundred Knives. It seemed to be the year the Lord was needing some mighty fine knife folks.

We lost Warren Osborne, Jack W. Crain, E.G. Smith, Brian Lyttle, Rob Brown and the Christy Knife Company in Fremont Ohio marked its’ 80th year.

In the rest of the world from astronauts to entertainers, too many to list.

But as I look through our Prayer group I am able to see iKC at its finest. We grieved but we also rejoiced together.

We shared prayers for fires to be extinguished in multiple states, and multiple times for the victims of lunatics. Syd Carr lost his sister but was able to make the cross country drive to see her, and we were able to meet him in person. Kaleb and Austin Buchanan both recovered well and Charles Sample pneumonia yielded to a full recovery. Dan Fitzgeralds’ wife came home well.

We shared prayers, good thoughts, each other’s fears and each other’s victories as the “Holy Grail” knife was found by quite a few.

iKC may never be the biggest or most active “forum” out there. It is my intention that we will always live up to our moto. A FAMILY FORGED IN STEEL

While it may not have been my favorite year, I did get to go through it with my favorite folks! Thank You all for being here with us. The members here are what make us the best!

The past few years have been quite an adventure for me, watching him learn to take a small piece of tool steel and make it into a hand forged knife. I always try to find something special as our Christmas giveaway and this year Don Carter has agreed to give away a knife made just for iKC.

Something that has been happening on some of the social media these days is games. For those of you that do not utilize those types of pages, they are a great and fun way to raise some funds and give everyone an option to own a particular knife. We cannot actually do a raffle, they come under some weird heading in internet rulings. What we can do is recognize each person donating.

I WANT TO PLAY A GAME!

So how this works is that there will be 30 slots open to donate into in this game. Each slot represents a donation of 10.00 USD to iKC. Post what numbers in the game you would like your name to be attached to and I will fill them in. When all 30 pieces have been played, I will use Random.org (and film it for your viewing) to choose the winner of our game.

Our winning donor will get the following, a unique knife.

Many of you were here in 2013 when a custom knife maker approached us and asked us to be our club knife maker that year. VERY long story short, the maker did not honor his commitment and Queen stepped in to build us a one off mountain man (Thank you Queen) But 5 of the knives WERE actually produced and have been sitting in my safe. If you have been watching me lately, I have trying to make sure some things come out of the collectors safes, mine included, and become available to more collectors. So I am going to offer one of those out to iKC members only.

A canoe pattern. The body and bolsters are milled 416 and the blade is 154CPM, with a 1/2 stop. It is 3 5/8 closed and it is a Stag Cut Red Bone. These 5 are the only knives ever made with an iKC tang stamp and the only customs ever made for this community.

Let the game begin and Thank You, to all our members, for all you do to support your community.

I really had to stop and think how to explain us. We are not a blog, too interactive. We are not a forum, but we have one. We are only a gathering place in our live chat. So back to my stand by, we are a knife community.

Next question, a what???

I took a long breathe in and said…

We are a community. A place where knife collectors come to talk about their hobby and sometimes we are where someone realizes they ARE a knife collector. We don’t quibble about what knives you choose to collect, that is up to you. We don’t judge your collector or you by the amount of money you spent on it, which just isn’t important. We love to see your newest, your oldest, and your favorite, to hear about your dream knife. We enjoy the history of the industry and are fortunate enough to have folks that can help us learn more and more.

Next Question? So all you talk about is knives?

That made me smile. Heck no, we are driven knife collectors and talk about that more than anything. But again, we are a community. We know each other, care about the families in the community…heck we even know each other’s dogs and pets.

Sooo, you have a big site and you all know each other??

Well, our community is not as large as some of the knife forums but every new member is greeted by the community. We don’t have a committee for that, our folks just do it. We have famous makers, large manufactures and knife makers from around the world. They are just part of the community like everyone else.

Before any other questions could be asked I just added…Come join us, you will find that we are not just a site. We are a community like no other
50+ Ideas for a Manly Collectiontag:iknifecollector.com,2016-02-07:3181080:Topic:13961492016-02-07T01:20:33.046ZJan Carterhttps://iknifecollector.com/profile/JanCarter

I have over the years had some very interesting discussions with manufactures, makers, collectors and users. I started having the discussions as a collector and they evolved as I became the owner here and they evolved again when I began publishing A Sharper Life.

I have over the years had some very interesting discussions with manufactures, makers, collectors and users. I started having the discussions as a collector and they evolved as I became the owner here and they evolved again when I began publishing A Sharper Life.

My first question…what do you look at when you receive a new knife? How do you look at it? Donnie and I actually do two totaling different things.

Whether it is a user or a collector. If it is a manufacture knife I start with, how it fits closed in my hand. The first thing I look at is the back spring, no gaps, cracks, how big is it? Then when I open it, how hard is that? Is the half stop tight? When I close it, is it a smooth action? Then I get a good look at the blade, Is it rubbing anywhere? Is it sharp? Then it is on to the fit and finish. How do the scales look, are there gaps, are the pins seated or sticking up? LOL, then it starts all over with a polishing cloth.

Do I look to see if the blade is absolutely centered? No I actually do not. I need it to be seated where it is opening and closing unimpeded, straight and not rubbing.

Do I look to see if there are cracks in the scales? Sort of. If I see what may be a crack or a split, I run my fingernail over it. If my nail catches, there is a crack if not, then no.

Do I check to see if there is play? I certainly do. All knives are built to be tools, even if I am choosing it for a collectible. This is the point I am most critical of.

Now for the kick, I look at a custom differently. Over the years I have learned it is the difference between looking to buy a Jeep or a Range Rover. Do I expect them both to work as designed and hold up to use YES! Do I expect that paying 3 to 10 times more for one than the other means there will be more attention to every detail YES.

A maker gets more for his knives than a manufacture. Many will tell you that you are not paying for materials, you are paying for the talent that created it. Do I expect that the sole maker, selling knives at that price point, prove to me that his talent is worth the expense? Yes I do and rarely have I been disappointed.

I do not put either of those knives under a magnifying glass for their inspection, I would hard pressed to be using them for the intended purposes under those circumstances. I don’t take one out and baton with it unless it was created for that use. Never would I use one as a pry bar to see its strength. OK, I know your laughing now, but really…this is a conversation I had just last week. A collector told me they do all these things when they get a new knife. So let's have a bit of a survey

Now back to my original question… what do you look at when you receive a new knife?
