It is physically stunning, the natural beauty wll take your breath away. When you can finally take that next breath, you realize you are hearing the sound of many anvils ringing out. That is because it is Hammer In weekend, when the owners of Trackrock allow an amazing group of knifemakers to take over their barn. Teaching children and adults alike the art of forging metal and knifemaking. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I do not have a thousand words but I do have pics!

Always a special weekend, this one was awesome. Old friends that had not been able to attend since Covid. Some people we considered friends from the internet, we were able to spend good time with over the weekend. Also, our grandson was able to get tips and pointes from a Forged in Fire bladesmith.

When Dakota started hammering he was about 6 foot and stood on a box to reach the anvil. Now he is over 6 foot and still spends as much time as he is able at the forge with Donnie.

We meet new friends that want their kids to have the opportunity to have fun and learn.

We always say if we can hook 1 kid a year the Hammer In has been a success.

While that is a priority at each Hammer In, this year the bladesmiths also accomplished a secondary goal. Working together to help each of them grow as well. This year they did a bit of metallergy. Each brings their own steel, some with known and some with unknown properties.

As I said, this year was awesome. I want to thank all that attended and all those that picked up a hammer to forge a young persons interest in knives and forging!

This may be one of the strangest times of our lives and hopefully something we never have to live through again.

The knife community will never cease to amaze me. I have learned over the years that something will always pop up to surprise me when I least expect it. This time it surprised me so much I forgot a cardinal rule! I accepted a sharp knife without giving the good man that made my day a penny.

The knife community will never cease to amaze me. I have learned over the years that something will always pop up to surprise me when I least expect it. This time it surprised me so much I forgot a cardinal rule! I accepted a sharp knife without giving the good man that made my day a penny.

Last week after the chat I spoke with a knife maker that has a cabin up here in our mountain town. I had never met him and was sad to say with the social distancing so important for 2 members of my household, it probably would not happen soon. I did however give him my address and a hope to meet him soon as we could.

Saturday our mountain with no traffic EVER seemed to turn into a major street. I couldn't believe it! Every time I turned around there was a car we did not know, one even turned into my driveway! Wait, that guy is getting out...he kindly kept his distance from my husband but laid a zipper pouch on the back of my little gold truck and said "This is for that lady up there on the porch". He turned, smiled and said Hi Jan, I am Russ and we will not stay..yelled a little introduction to his wife, we all waved and we invited him back when this is all over to visit Donnies' knife shop. BUT I was so surprised that he had brought me one of his knives with all this going on that I forgot to give him a penny :( .

Russ, I cannot thank you enough! Not only did you bring me a knife (and a damn fine one at that) but you brought me a smile I needed at that moment.

Just joined and thanks for the warm welcome. This knife was my Grandfather's who was born the year 1913. But I am not sure when he aquired it. I have not been able to find any kind of markings on it. Anybody have an idea of a rough time frame from the looks? I saw a similar knife online that someone said looked something like a German Paratrooper knife. Thanks in advance.

There have been ups and downs in antique knife prices. When recessions hit prices drop as fewer collectors have spare change. Even when financial times are good some brands prices drop down... its like the stock market.

I believe that well made knives-the best of the best-overall increase in value. Others that were really popular then drop down may come back.

I believe that well made knives-the best of the best-overall increase in value. Others that were really popular then drop down may come back.

Consider Weidmannsheil a German brand once available through Parkers' Knife Service. Many of these are as well made as you could get. Stag handles and well machined. They had good weight and are above average size. When buying antiques typically the larger an antique the higher a price for items of the same type,..as a small painting is worth less than a large painting by the same artist. Making this brand in other foreign countries with questionable quality has hurt the older quality Weidmannsheil.

Another under priced knife might be Cripple Creek especially the older types such as Old Fort rather than Effingham.

Some newer collectors are buying custom knives at premium prices. Overall I believe the antique market will come back for those knives in good shape. Competition will drive down custom prices somewhat.

Knives are a kind of investment but i do not bet my future on them as I do with the stock market.
