One year later and not much rain, if any at all. California is officially having a drought. Which sucks, because that means I can't wait around until it rains to rinse all the dirt and dust off my truck. I have to wash it...err pay someone to wash it. Oh well.

Yep, it rained yesterday. Whoopdedoo! And, our local mountains also got a light dusting of the white powdery stuff - SNOW!

It's hilarious when it rains and snows in Southern California. The local television channels make a big production out of it. The Reporters stand in gutters on the street with trickles of water running over their rain boots to illustrate the ferocity of the storm, as the News Anchors and Meteorologists excitedly proclaim that we are on STORMWATCH!…

We just just dodged the bullet when tropical storm Karen dissipated. It was a pain to have to be prepared, If you live within a few hundred yards of the bay, and only a few feet above it, You worry when there may be a surge along with maybe 10 inches of rain swelling the rivers. Our place has been fortunate in the past with homes flooded to the roof just a mile away. We have to take these warnings seriously. We own properties out west to retreat to as climate change worsens the floods and storms. But, it's hard to leave the whole family behind. Recently, we have talked about the possibility of moving permanently to one of our favorite areas in North Georgia. Atlanta is an area with lots of opportunity and if a young person is thinking long range, it should be considered.

The aftermath of heavy rains in the West causing flooding is a direct result of mismanagement of public lands.Building in areas without thinking of the detriment to the environment and deforestation for profit is resulting in more frequent fires of greater magnitude. The forests are clear cut, leaving debris on the ground creating fuel for fires that will be there when the next clearing adds to it, I've seen areas where the woods are cleared of naturally occurring regeneration of native trees by so-called controlled burns that is simply "busy" work that does more harm than good. Then the trees left standing are harvested and fast-growing hybrids are planted in unsightly rows for the next profit taking. The original diversity of plants and animals will never return. Oaks that provide food for many animals are poisoned or cut down because there is little profit in slow growing trees. Man has done a thousand times more harm to our environment than Mother Nature has. She is only reacting to that. But, we still have people who deny Climate Change. It's here folks. Make long range plans for surviving it starting today.
