As a boy in the 1960's, I got interested in buying and trading knives. Not collecting. My dad ran a country store He sold beer and guys were always sitting around drinking shooting the Bull and trading & selling Knives, Guns, Tools etc. Not many Animals were traded or sold because most of the Men didn't want anything else that needed to be fed. They all believed if it ate they didn't need another mouth to buy food for!

Jump fore ward to 1992, We moved into a new Home with a C-Band Sat. Dish. I found the WILD and CRAZY Friday night knife Show! Cousin Kris kirk ( spelling)! He sold a lot of SMKW knives. I always thought most were overpriced and although I never caught him out right lying about any knife ,I believe he would stretch the truth just like any good Trader would! He sold many knives. A couple I Remember one I bought A German eye Jim Bowie large Stockman as a novice I gave $95.00 for it in near mint condition. Most all of them Kris said were Rare. Another that I did not buy was a Case xx USA 62042R . He asked me $325.00 for it one night I politely said NO. I also came across few time Bruce Voyles I did buy a Case XX 61011 in Bone Stag near mint but I paid $140.00, but I really wanted that knife. I also bought a 521500 Razor Trapper from him for $50.00. Looking back I believe that was a good buy.

This was before I had the internet and Ebay. During the 1990's some time I found Sargent in Alabama and Parker in Chattanooga. The catalogs and knife listings were great and both their descriptions were accurate. I started to buy the Case Classics. The family would give them to me for Christmases, Birthdays, Anniversaries, they were what I wanted. Just mark the catalogs and Tell the wife and kids. First Myself I bought Bone and the pretty Celluloid. I realized that the Celluloid was a disaster waiting to happen, so I sold them. I then Bought Stag! . At the time most Case Classics were reasonable in Price $49.00, $69.00 up to $150 each. OH a few like the Big Display knives were over $300 & the 51, & 61072 Pattern went High.. I had 1 of All the ones in Stag at one time but sold many. You can only clean Polish and protect so many knives! I also saw a lot of what i believe were re-handled Case classics in all sorts of Exotic Handle's. I was also a member of the CCCC which was Disbanded. But that is another story. I also bought knife Furniture as my wife called the Case Displays. I had several I liked the counter top the best and the front opening was the easiest to store and get to the knives. Now the majority of my collection is the Case 65 pattern. I never use them just enjoy the fact that I have been Very Blessed by GOD to be able to enjoy this hobby. Many of the Case Classics pictured in the displays i sold. Also the regular issues of the Case Cheetah patterns, I sold. I still collect a few knives, but now they are the inexpensive ones like Rough Rider, New Marble's, or some older Keen Kutter. I have learned a lot over the 20 plus years. I have tons of Books, & Catalogs as resource material. I still enjoy the Hobby and ebay it gives me something to do and is some times entertaining !

A final thought or at least an ending thought for now. If your scrolling through ebay and see a Counterfeit knife. take a minute to report it. I really hate to see Novice Collectors get taken by some shyster seller. JMO

Well guys, my story is very different. I started because of a specific blade. some 30 odd years ago I wanted to get Donnie a knife for Christmas. What I knew was his collection was 95% Case and he loves a wharncliff blade.

Being the research nut that I am I started researching this odd blade. A few days later I was researching Case knives. Then I was contacting a dealer that had some older unused Case Classic in the 55 pattern. WOW, they came in 3 sizes!

At the time I was a material damage adjuster for vehicles. Crawling around wrecks in body shops and in toe yards, I carried a pocket knife daily. I was also a new knife collector!

I was fascinated with the history of pocket knives in our country, I was hooked. That year Donnie got the larger of three stag, the medium to match and I got the smaller one for myself. Christmas after that saw some form of stag in this style (they came with different shields LOL) under the tree and the start of a his/hers and ours collections.

About a decade ago Donnie began playing around with building fixed blades, we were still adding to the collection with folders. Now I live with a knife shop downstairs and fixed blades are a new focus of the collection. DLKG, this is the point where I son became a collector also. He collects custom fixed blades.

Somewhere in between those 2 he came home from work one day and asked what I did on my day off. You should have seen his face when I said I bought a knife forum!

Thanks for sharing your stories here I truly enjoyed reading them. Who is next?? Tell us your story!
DLKG - Are you my brother fro…tag:iknifecollector.com,2021-08-07:3181080:Comment:16839872021-08-07T17:48:47.689ZLars Rayhttps://iknifecollector.com/profile/LarsRay

DLKG - Are you my brother from a different mother? LoL!

Your story could easily be mine...except for the collecting folders part. Apparently my collecting and tastes have not matured as far as yours yet. While I do have some nice folders, I do not seek them out like I do the fixed (think Quigley Down Under...I never said I don't know how to use one...).

Like yours and so many others, my collection has evolved from "quantity" based to "quality" based (while still trying for the quantity!), enjoying the lesser expensive knives for a few years then selling them off to buy something grander or more exotic. Then I come across someone here at iKC who shows off some forgotten "cheapie" from years gone past and explains what a rare find it is. Ugh! I could kick myself! I had three of them! Who knew?

Your notes on building a knife collection ring true, and sometimes we just need to take a second look and re-appreciate the pieces that make up our collections. However, like you, I still add to my wish list of "someday" knives.

To contribute to the theme of this blog, here is another contribution written a few years ago that can add to your notes on building a knife collection.
