Great work! The hood frames the face nicely, and I like the fact that it "fades" around the outside of the portrait. Is that mammoth ivory or micarta?

Thanks for all the nice comments. I would have responded last night but we had a few tornados in the Louisville,KY area . They just came in one storm cell after another. Churchill Downs had the most damage with several barns going down but no horse or human injuries. Thanks for your kind words. I have always thought Churchill had a great face and the work I do for the cigar community on custom cutters was a chance to use his face. The industry has it's biggest show in Vegas next month and I hope they snatch them up. I will be in England next week and am showing the cutters at a few Londaon high end cigar stores. Thanks again HutcH

  • Chuck Parham

Beautiful work here. I recently started learning this fascinating art form and will be asking lots of questions so please bear with me.

  • Chuck Parham

I started training myself in doing this work by using ivory colored electrical wall switch plates to learn how different types of tools would work. I also experiment using hashing, stipple, and cutting as well as different mediums for coloring such as ink, paint, charcoal, shoe polish. I've also used some faux bone. I've been using needles of different sizes and exacto blades. I'd love to know where some of you get your tools from. I'm attaching some of the pieces I have done. Remember, I'm new and just starting out.

  • Jan Carter

Chuck, Very well done and what an intresting way to have inexpensive materials to work with I LOVE IT

  • Chuck Parham

A few more just learning basics.

  • Chuck Parham

I had a person tell me that I have emerged into the field of art. He said I'm using a very old art form and using a modern day medium. He said that kind of art is in demand.  LOL

  • Chuck Parham

    A pendant I made for my step-daughter.

Thank You, I am glad to like it .

  • Chuck Parham

My first purchase. It's a small piece but it's a start.

  • Chuck Parham

Recently purchased. It'll make a great piece for display whenever I get a chance to set up a table somewhere.

  • Jan Carter

Charles, is that it?  He decided to ship it?  That is fantastic

  • Chuck Parham

Jan, Yes it is. He shipped it with a letter of apology. He said he didn't really understand eBay "stuff". I think maybe it's because I filed a complaint with eBay? Anyway, I like it. It will be a nice attention getter for my Scrimshaw knives whenever I set up a display.

  • Rick "HutcH" Hutchings

Chuck is your tooth real or a resin cast tooth? The flat bottom has me suspect. Do you have an open area at the bottom or is it solid flat accross?

  • Chuck Parham

I suspect it is a resin cast but here's a picture of the bottom for your opinion Hutch. Thanks.

  • Rick "HutcH" Hutchings

Yes it is a cast unit. The image may be cast also check the edges of the scribed lines if they are a little rounded on the edge it amy be cast. The perimeter art without much interior shading also may indicate a cast image. If you want to scrim your own cast tooth check out Boone Tradeing Post. They have anything you need for scrimshaw. They carry cast and real items as well as findings, belt buckles , pendant and raw mammoth ivory and materials.Keep scratching... HutcH

  • Chuck Parham

Most of the lines are sharp edges with a difference in depth and width. I figured it wasn't a real tooth but I didn't buy it for its authenticity. I bought it more for an attention getter and a display piece. I am happy with it. I sure appreciate your expertise. I have Boones site and as soon as I am able to get back to work, I'll be buying some materials. I feel that I need to practice on some different materials and continue developing my skills. Thanks for your input Hutch!

  • Rick "HutcH" Hutchings

Chuck send me an address . I will send a cross section of scrap. I will buff the surface so you can scratch right away. On the buffalo horn try just scratching the highlight areas. Reverse is dramatic and you can see your working easier as you scratch. Fill it with white acrylic paint, and wipe away the excess immediately. I want in my lifetime for scrimshaw to be accepted as a mainstream art form. I will help any scrimschander get going. ...HutcH
