First Knife - Bowie (1991-ish)

My very first knife, which I made going on... 29? 30 years ago. Young guns had recently been out, and I really liked the way Chavez's(?) (played by Lou Diamond Phillips) bowie looked at the time. I wanted to make a knife, but figured since it was my first one, I would make plenty of mistakes, causing the blade to get smaller and smaller. I did have a touch of tip curl, but other than that, the blade remains 'full size'. ¼" thick A2 tool steel. 13 3/4" long; 1 pound 1 ounce. I have learned so much about leather work since I made that sheath. The stamped design was done with the filed down head of a 16 penny nail for crying out loud. LOL. The wood on the handle is black walnut that came from a tree that blew down on my great grandma's place in Arkansas.

Oh!  One thing that Jan thought was a little different with my process...

The only power tool that was used was my drill press, which I used to cut a LOT of holes to profile the blade.  Then I cut between the holes with my hacksaw, then filed everything down to shape.  I used the drill press again for the tang holes and used a drum sander on the drill press to help with sanding the edges.

Everything was removed with a file, and then hand sanded.  Yeah.  It took a while.

    That's cool, Kevin.

    Awesome.
