Some wooden chains that I've made. From top to bottom. Chains are from 1" square by 12" long pieces except bottom chain which was made from a 2' long piece of wood. From top to bottom - tulipwood, kingwood, ziricote, cocobolo and black & white ebony. I cheated on most of these. Only about 40% done by hand the rest involved my router, drill press, dremel tool and belt sander/grinder. I did my first couple entirely by hand but then realized that I don't have patience or enough bandaids to do them all by hand! Besides that ebony is some hard wood - I did one out of ebony by hand (12" long one that I gave away).

Thanks Steve,

Actually it's not too awfully bad. I saw one of these on Ebay next to a knife someone was selling. I asked how much the chain was figuring it would be around $50 max but the seller wanted $250! That was a little rich for my blood! I've enjoyed whittling since I was a kid and these chains fascinated me but didn't know how these were done. I found a whittling book in my local Woodcraft store that described how to do these. I started with the larger size ones in fairly soft woods and then moved to the smaller size and harder woods. My first ones were done largely if not totally by hand but then I figured ways to use power tools to save some time.
