Making the move to Arkansas

I've been giving this a lot of thought and after spending a couple of weeks there. I figured it was time to make the move. So as of 6-1-19 I will be an Arkansas resident, My Sister and her Husband have lived there for 30+ years.

She's been asking me to come stay for a week or so and I finally did.

I moved to a small town called Glenwood, its about 35 miles east of Hot Springs. A 6 hour drive I did not enjoy as it was hot and I got really tired towards the end of…

Knife show on a budget

Kaylin and I, along with my grandson, Nik, and son-in-law, Matt, made the 5 hour drive up to the Dalton show, this past weekend.

While the biggest topic of conversation was Jan's not being able to come, we still had a great time.  As always, I enjoy seeking out other iKC members and sponsors; special shout out to Ken and Roger, of Blue…

Info on A.J. Jordan Knife

Found a A.J. Jordan - Sheffield England pocket knife at an estate sale for next to nothing and wondered about the maker. Main blade is broken (hence the next to nothing price) will likely try to restore if I can find a replacement blade.

Thrift Store Treasure

Just found this Camillus 5" Boy Scouts Of America Folding Hunter, jigged bone handles, single bolster, BSA shield & inscription, and oh, did I mention the oh-so-cool secondary serrated blade? This has separate locks for each blade, something I have never seen before. I've been watching this knife at a local thrift store for months, hoping no one would buy it out from under me, fortunately it was priced so high no one snagged it, so I took a chance and waited for a sale. Well, today they…

The Top Five Boker Fixed Blade Knives! (Look! I made a Top Five list!)

The Top Five Boker Fixed Blade Knives

(Since 1955)

As you may already know, I am a fan of Boker knives. I am not so much a fan of “Top 5” or “Top 10” lists, but so many people are doing it, there must be something to it! I have limited this list to post-WW2 knives, because the pre-war knives are so difficult to find nowadays. All the knives in this list are still being produced by the Heinrich Boker Baumwerk in Solingen, Germany. So if…

1950's Cold War Strategic Air Command (SAC) Long Range Bomber Crew Survival Knife!

Over half a century ago the United States Air Force was America's primary nuclear deterrent. This was accomplished by its long range bomber aircraft operated by the Strategic Air Command, the B-36, the B-47 and later on the B-52. ICBMs came along even later. To maintain razor sharp proficiency in the nuclear mission long range training missions were an daily occurrence and took airmen over every corner of the world. The Air Force became interested in refining its survival kits and…

I'm back.....kinda

Well, I've not been that active in collecting knives the past year, but having had two major surgeries and concentrating on trying to pay off the knives I had purchased previous to a year ago has kept me otherwise occupied; until today. Having been pretty much confined to home most of the year got the best of me today, I was feeling good, and was done with the major event I put on in Big Sur annually so I decided I needed to get out of the house and me being me I chose to go on a thrift…

Western Fillet Knife

Have been doing some research on a Western Fillet knife; but I’m not finding any answers. Time to ask the pros. The subject knife is a Western (duh) fillet knife, with a 6” blade, and 11” overall. It is stamped W766, with an “F” code. What I’ve learned, or think I’ve learned is that it’s a Model W766, that was made in 1982. But what I also encounter is that by far, most of these model 766 fillet knives are marked S-W 766. Does anyone here know what, or why the difference with a knife…

How and Why Custom Knives Appreciate in Value - Part 2

Next came the “Drawing!” No, not a picture, but those events that are now common place at every major knife show in the United States. My first experience with this was in the 80’s watching Michael Walker have a drawing for his knives (usually a single knife.) Anyone who has any experience with sales will tell you “money talks.” It is no different with the custom knife market. What was starting to happen is certain individuals would start to buy every knife on a…

How and Why Custom Knves Appreciate in Value - 1

This 5 part blog is based on 33 years watching the custom knife market and all the cycles therein.  I hope you find it informative.

If you ask most custom knife buyers they will tell you, “I buy what they like,” with all other considerations being secondary; including the knife’s ability to appreciate in value. That being said, what is it that makes a knife appreciate in value?  Innovators and innovations will always find their way to the top.

If you look at the majority of…

KA-BAR information sought

An uncle gave my Dad this KA-BAR in 1945.  Dad carried it every day until about 2000, and gave it to me in 2003 or 2004.  I would like to learn anything about it.  (I don't want to sell or trade it as it was my Dad's, and some day I will pass it on.)

(The grids in the photos are 1/4 inch.)

Many thanks.…

Exciting flea market find

My son, a tenderfoot scout, and I happened to come across this jem this past weekend. The photos dont do it justice. I have to share. We’re researching it and learning A lot about the Press Button Knife Company. The mother of pearl handle is perfect. Scratches through the invincible are the only minor flaw. …

Case Mid Folding Hunter Assisted Opening Pocket Knife

Case has taken a big step....a step outside of their comfort zone. They have been partnering with other knife makers such as Winkler Knives. Case and Daniel Winkler have produced two fixed blade knives of the likes Case has never produced. They are some of the best in the world.

Now comes Case's contribution. Case to my knowledge, correct me Jan if I am wrong, has never produced an assisted opening knife. I call them opening assist. They did produce some auto pocket knives…

Spring 2018 Update

Finally recovering  a bit from cervical spinal fusion surgery, talk about steel, I now have a titanium plate/screws in my neck and am now getting ready for yet another surgery sometime in May, (rotator cuff repair), that one may require hardware too; sigh....

Despite those distractions I have managed to obtain a knife or two that I will mention here. Just received this very nice Camillus-made Crossman 932A 3 3/4" closed wood-handled folder, (Ash handle I think?). I don't…
