Andy's Christmas Card to iKC

Woke up, grabbed my coffee and headed to my computer to check in with you guys...always got to make sure the Beer Group didn't trash the place over night (just kidding guys). :)

This morning I head from my house to our community center and there staring at me was a man with Christmas lights draped cross him. I didn't recognize him at all. I clicked the slide show and clicked back. Sure nuf- I thought that might be him.

I love it. And it's Andy,… Continue

Custom Knifemaker Tony Bose Interview

One of the all time favorite interviews I have had the opportunity to conduct was with legendary knifemaker Tony Bose. Tony is so easy to talk with and his colorful way of expressing himself made it a true pleasure.

I hope you will take some time to listen in on his interview. Tony tells us why he started making knives, in addition to candid advice for aspiring knife makers. He also provides an insider’s perspective on the custom knife market and today’s… Continue

My response to the 2010 iKC Club Knife discussion

Over the last several days, I read the blog post and thought about the comments posted about my choice for the 2010 iKC Club Knife.

First let me say, I appreciate all the members who emailed me privately as well as posted and replied in the two previous blog post regarding the Club Knife. And I'm glad to see the amount of interest this topic created. Thanks for caring about our community.

Let me begin by addressing the group who voiced their opinion against my selection of… Continue

iKC 2010 Club Knife

Yesterday, I sent this email to all iKC members. Please make sure your iKC email settings are set to receive email from me- scott@iknifecollector.com. I do periodically communicate to the members via email. I understand some of the members didn't receive my message so here it is.

I'm excited to announce iKC is having a 2010 club knife special ordered.

iKC is all about connecting, sharing and getting to know fellow like-minded collectors. 2009 has been a great… Continue

Knife Show Here I Come!

Around this time of year I trek up to near Gatlinburg, TN for the Parker's Knife Show. This particular show is billed as "The Greatest Show on Earth," and while I admit is it good, is it the greatest? I don't think so. Actually I think the Blade Show in Atlanta takes top billing, but Parker's Show is the first knife show I attended, back some years ago and is now my sentimental favorite.

I'll never forget. I got there before the doors opened and sat in the car wondering… Continue

iKC History! Our Community's First Group Club Knife

Hats off to the Indiana Residents Group here at iKC. These guys are making history early in our community's short life already.

I've written before how this "virtual" knife club is every bit as real as any knife club in the world. Granted, their clubhouse is housed within iKC and they don't have weekly meetings down at the Western Sizzl'n, but, boy, have they made a name for themselves here among the… Continue

iKC Member Avatar

I don't like it. No, I don't. You know that little red man picture- the default image representing a member who can't or won't load up a picture for us.

Folks don't tend to like change so just to up and change their default picture will rock their boat (I know this already because I changed it twice now- once for Halloween and then yesterday for Thanksgiving- both of those times was just for lite hearted fun :) )

So, to change it will upset some folks, BUT I… Continue

Grading a knife's condition

Knife Condition Grades - weighting all the factors for old knives

When you are looking at an older knife, just how much weight do you put on the different factors to determine it's overall condition grade? You know what I'm talking about here: the Condition Grades, like- Mint, Near Mint, Very Good, Good, Poor and Junk- at least those are the grades of one of the systems floating around out there, but there are others.

I know not all of us are into… Continue

If you like factory collections of pristine mint condition knives, then feast your eyes. Roger Russell is a major Boker collector and significantly contributed to the Boker article by Mark Zalesky in this month's Knife World. I shot this for him :)

Two iKC Members in the news

We have two iKC members in the news- David Anthony and Mark Zalesky.

David recently interviewed Knife World's Editor, Mark Zalesky. Mark isn't taken to getting press, so he wouldn't allow the interview to run in Knife World, so guess what- Cutlery News Journal ran it. Mark is a behind the scenes kinda guy and deserves all… Continue

Pledges and Donations to the National Breast Cancer Foundation

As you probably know we are having a fun fundraising auction shown on the community's homepage. Thank you who are bidding. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In addition, I have been contacted by members who wish to make a donation through the iKC campaign directly, so here's what we are doing.

If you wish to pledge a donation, please indicate such below by responding with your pledge. I'll follow up with my address for your check. It will need to be made out to the… Continue

BREAKING NEWS- Customs attempt to redefine a switchblade is now dead!

Word just in from KnifeRights.org via text message: "Senate passed Homeland Appropriations Bill with our amendment to the Federal Switchblade Act intact!"

This is a MAJOR victory for the Knife Industry and users/collectors. See Cutlery News Journal for more details.

One of our favorite times of the year- Pumpkin Carving Time!

Knife users love to carve, don't we? Here's your change to show off your skill. When my kids were younger I used to carve funny/silly faces on our pumpkins. They usually weren't very good. But I know some folks take this art of pumpkin carving very seriously.

If you are carving a pumpkin this year, snap you a pic of it and load it up to share with us. Don't forget to show us the knife (or knives) you used for this delicate procedure.

Want some ideas, check out… Continue

The Rules of Knife Collecting

Sometime back over at Cutlery News Journal we concluded knife collecting qualifies as a sport. And, by definition, a sport is governed by a framework of understandings commonly called rules.

“Rules,” you say, “there aren't any rules associated with knife collecting.”

Oh, contraire, but it does. I will admit they weren’t easy to find, but find them I did, though I… Continue

Knives 2010, The World's Greatest Knife Book- A must have for all knife enthusiasts

While its billing as The World's Greatest Knife Book may be a little over the top, Knives 2010 is a must have for all knife lovers.

It's Krause Publications' 30th Anniversary Edition and it is chocked full of over 1000 high quality knife photos of all makes and models. (Granted 1000 pictures pales in comparison to iKC's over 5000 pictures, it is still a wonderful view of custom made knives by today's top makers.)

If you like to look at cool knives-… Continue

A Case of Case Trivia

You probably know that my favorite knife pattern probably has more documented names (nicknames) than any other pattern I am able to identify. The list includes, Old Honesty, Butterbean, Pumpkinseed, Red Eye, Elephant's Toe, English Rope Knife, Toe, Sunfish, Camp Knife, Pocket Axe, Vest Pocket Axe (my favorite), Jumbo, The Bulldog and probably others.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED?

I know it has been a topic of conversation as to when Case first… Continue

Helping spread the word- iKC Handout

Jeff Saylor's self-initiative of passing our iKC invitation flyers at a recent show provides us all an excellent example of how real our virtual community actually is!

There are tens of thousands of knife enthusiasts who may be interested in connecting in a very real way here at iKC. So, I ask you print a few dozen of the new iKC Handout and take them with you wherever you go- knife shows, club meetings, knife factory open houses, hardware & knife stores...in… Continue

Finally It Tasted My Blood

An axiom in the knife world you've probably heard is- "A knife only becomes yours when it decides to taste your blood."

Sure we all own knives we think are ours but from the knife's point of view- it only agrees to be yours at the time it decides to taste your blood.

Well I am proud to say my new EDC agreed to be mine yesterday.

The story is kinda funny and illustrates how careless we knife… Continue
