Do you collect folding knives by pattern, series or brandname????

I have an ever expanding list of knives on my potential purchase list.  Is it best to collect by pattern ( trapper, muskrat) series (black pearl, coal miner) or brandname ( rough rider, case) ??

I collect 3 ways, certain patterns, brands and types. By types I mean, Novelty Knives or Customs, types like that. By brands I mean Richards, Kissing Crane and Case: Brands like that. By Patterns I mean; Moose, Barlow and Hobo's and other patterns like that. When I buy a knife it usually falls into one of those categories.

Yes, to all of the above-LOL-When I first started collecting it was Case brand-My first knife, was a Case as a boy, and my dad, grandad, and brothers all carried Case- Then, decided on Case trappers because they probably have the most extensive variety of handle materials,etc-I have also collected by series, such as when Shepherd Hills offered 7254SS trappers in exotic woods like Zebrawood, tulipwood, etc, or when I attempted  to collect every knife on page 66 of the Case Classics-Best in the long haul book  (20071/2 light trappers) which I finally did accomplish-Now, as I am vintage in years, I tend to collect vintage knives, regardless of brand or pattern-The life of a knife collector is ever evolving !! LOL Buy what you like, particularly those that have some sort of memory or connection to your life or those of loved ones-

John, I am right there with you and understand completely.

I too am rather "vintage" these days myself and that's okay, but it is the very reason I so enjoy my little assortment of 100 year old Mother of Pearl, Bruckmann folders.  There is just a little bit of satisfaction in having a collection of fine knives that are older than I am.

I appreciate the fact that they are in pristine mint condition........which I am decidedly not.

I am also into Vintage Knives, especially Vintage Hobo's from WWI and WWII. I own a few of them and would own more, it's just the price tag they have on those things.

Yes, any knife related to a love one is priceless. I have a couple from my Dad and Grandfather.

I am primarily "pattern first" then "brand"   I rarely collect a "series"

Folding Patterns

1) camp/scout

2) Marlinspike/Folding rigger

3) Large (5 Inch) Toothpick

4) Novelty/Pen knves

5) Fish Knives

6) Mushroom

Fixed blades tend to be military or traditional hunting knives (so just about anything!)

Brand:

Camillus and Camillus sub-contracted  (pre-2007)

Rough Rider

Victorinox

Other USA brands

I think about picking up some of the new-fangled "tactical knives" but the closet I get is the new-fangled Rigging knives by Myerchin.

Most of what I collect consists of older EOs, anything Hammer Brand or Imperial Brand from the 1930s to 1950s. EOs are mainly older 3 and 4 inline Camillus, HSB, Brantford Cut, Schrade Cut and the like.

i just buy knives till im broke then buy more...

LOL, I heard that about you Peter!

LOL-questions like this make my brain hurt...LOL..

i love knife folk.. i love the custom maker....i love vintage knives all beat up with 100 years of history and brand new shiny things i love my studies  on cutlery and so forth{mostly PA knives}.

but i guess like most said it just comes down to what

ya like..LOL..or.. LOVE...

sometimes i do get set in a way.. like right now i have a WHARN BLADE obsession...

i have actually been trying to back off though.. im even considering ONLY CUSTOM knives.. lots of reasons{would need another thread}    besides that though.. im actually trying to SAVE again!.. trying to make a move...saving money to me is always "saving for a new knife" money..LOL

questions like this one and others like it..they are great questions ..and fun..especially if its a picture show!... i honestly think that after 10+ years i have just seen it and every time its the same thing that pops in my head when asked about bone or stag or g10 or fixed or folded ..ectect.. MAKE BRAIN HURT...LOL!..

A funny thing about my vintage Hobbo knives from the early 19th century. Most say the closer to mint a vintage knife is the more value they have but when it comes to my WWI and WWII Hobo's I want them to be in good used condition. The reason for this is I feel fairly sure that they so action during those Wars, if in that condition. Anyone else have desire for some ware on their Vintage Knives.

Yes, in that case you certainly don't want to clean off all that history.

100% ROBERT!!.. REALLY CLEAN AND SHINY VINTAGE SCARES ME AWAYmost times... i LOVE HISTO)RY i guess you could say..or "my knife to have a life"  so looks like i agree...LOL!..thats not to say you cant find a nice piece of cleran vintage that has its own life on how it stayed so clean all these years...like the WW2 FISH KNIFE in my photos..if you like WW2 knives..its a dandy!
