Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

For the past couple of years, I have only been buying razors, quite a few razors actually, and I have had no problem having these delivered in the mail. As I am now an impoverished pensioner I can't afford to collect knives and razors so I hadn't kept up with our new knife purchasing laws I had been aware that the legislation was changing of course but had let it slip from my mind.

This Summer I hope to be able to spend a good deal of time whittling in my shed or in the garden. My main knife used for this purpose has been A Scandi grind lock knife, a EnZo Birk to be precise in D2.

I have a Flexcut whittling knife that I do find useful, though heaven knows it is a poor piece of design from a practical point of view. This knife is very uncomfortable in use as the various blades manage to protrude enough to threaten your hands even when supposedly safely locked away in the handle.

So I thought it would be good to buy a knife that I could use for long periods comfortably. A little bit of surfing the net and I have decided to try a Roselli Bear Claw from Finland. Part of the appeal is a UHC carbon blade and the other part is a very comfortable handle. So decision made I went to order it from Lamnia in Finland a firm I have used before and been happy with.

As I said earlier I had forgotten about the new regulations otherwise known as The Offensive Weapons Act 2019 so the extra stages of ordering the knife came as a surprise. Not a shock just a surprise. First before checkout, I had to tick a box saying that I was over the age of sixteen.which is not too arduous. However then I had an email which stated that I had to send a picture of my driving licence or passport to prove my age. As my driving licence is still of the older type I needed to send a picture of my over 65 bus pass, my passport is in need of renewal and I haven't bothered as I haven't been abroad. Then instead of having the knife sent by Finnish post service as before I had to pay UPS £12.50 to deliver it, at least until we leave the EU I don't get hit for import duties and am registered for problem-free deliveries with Lamnia and UPS. Shouldn't speak too soon about problem-free I guess as it hasn't arrived yet!!!!

A small article about the new legislation about the Offensive Weapons Act 2019 below the comment section below it is interesting with regard to thumb studs. It seems strange I suppose to most of us on this forum how the most useful of tools has suddenly become an Offensive Weapon.

No offence was taken at all Mario and in fact, I agree with you. Won't hold my breath waiting for things to change here though.

No offense intended John, but I am blessed to live in the USA and most blessed to be in Arizona. We are Constitutional Carry state, which means that we may carry firearms open or concealed, without a permit of any kind. Just an age and lack of felony conviction requirement.

Also, we may own, carry and display any knife; including the most maligned automatic knife. We can even use the dreaded term of 'switchblade'. I hope that your country will come to its senses and, once again, trust its citizens and allow a more open stance about guns and knives. The British were lions in the Second World War, partly because they knew how to handle and use firearms.

All the best to you and your fellow countrymen.

John,

I think I see in the pics that your knife has come home. I tend to agree, the older I get the less common sense I see around us

Jan, when we have fully left the EU, officially we are out but continue to trade normally until a new deal is in place, there will be no change to the offensive weapons act. My point was more of a personal one in that I can now buy knives from Lamnia having registered and proven my age. However if no free trade agreement is made with Europe then I would need to pay the same import duties and collection fees that make buying knives from the States so expensive.

Of course trade agreements will be made with other countries which could be beneficial. I don't believe the offensive weapons act will change though. It would need a change to the law for that to happen and that would be difficult. Most people would think it a good idea that people couldn't buy knives online. It's crazy because any large store in the country sells kitchen knives. Life often looks crazy to me, more often as I get older.

Just had a message to say my knife has been shipped whilst I was typing this so we will see how it works.

John,

It seems to be the week for me to hear this from both your country and our own.  It seems that since you cannot regulate against our buying them, they will regulate against anyone selling them.  Prior to 2016 I had friends in the business that were being no less than harassed by Google, certain companies that host websites and those that process credit cards.  Seems it settled down for a little while and then BOOM!  Like a clap of lightening a single business was hit by all three last week, for selling "weapons".  This is not a new business, it has been in existence for many many years.  Thankfully all we do is talk about them so no one bites us.

The word "weapons", in my opinion, is a learned expression.  15 years ago no one on either side of the ocean would have considered a pocket knife or a craving knife a weapon.  Statistics show that violence with a knife is more often than not, done with a kitchen knife.  The people that choose to press their own opinions on all of us continue to call every knife a weapon and doing that enough has started to make it stick.

I notice you said until you leave the EU.  Will the laws revert back or change at that point?
