It is that time of year.  The leaves are falling and the pumpkins are calling.  I love this contest because it is all about the fun and family!  So carve, bring the kids and grandkids out to play!  Lets carve happy, scary, funny and just have fun!

The last 2 years we have sure seen some of it all

Rules are simple

1) Have Fun

2) Members and Family are invited to play

3) Take a pic of the carved item and the knives...the fun in carving is also good :)

4) Post it right here in this discussion prior to October 30, 2014

I agree Rusty I will be picking one up before we leave the mountains to take home and "create" my carving with!

Thanks folks. A few Octobers back I wrote a Knife World editorial about a book called "Extreme Pumpkins" which has some interesting carving ideas and techniques in it. I suppose that most of the ideas can be found somewhere on the internet too, but I'm a book guy. Anyway, I really like the eyes on the jack o' lantern on the book's cover (used on the one at far left above) and I have done a few of the pumpkins-eating-pumpkins which are fun. They actually recommend using things like drills and sabre saws, but I did these with a Gerber Miming that's probably 40+ years old. Thin and narrow blade, and a long handle for good control.

NICE ONES !

Saw Jan & Donnie at SMKW today and Jan said that I should upload a photo of our pumpkins. 4 year old John likes everything about pumpkins up to the point that the slimy stuff appears and then he leaves Dad to do the carving, so here are the five I carved this year with guidance from the family. The 2nd from the right is eating a smaller pumpkin, but it's kinda hard to see here...

Well so far Mark would be declared our winner :)

Finally, I got a punkin carved.  I planned & planned, and as soon as the knife touched the pumpkin it took over and did it's own thing.  The only thing I planned on was the leaves for a skirt, but decided I didn't like them and did a mouth instead.  I used gumdrops on toothpicks to hold the lid up above the body, but they were dissolving fast.  The gumdrops in the eyes fell out before I got the mouth finished.  All in all a fun time using a Case muskrat - that muskrat blade is hard to beat for jack-o-lanterns.  (You may recognize the knife - it was the prize last year in the pumpkin carving contest!)

good one Rusty!  and that Case Muskrat is taking on a nice pumpkin patina as well!

Well they eyes have for that toothy young pumpkin and I am impressed with the choice of knives!  Thanks for posting Rusty

Alright, here we go. Tools were a Condor Nesmuk, Smith & Wesson and Blue bone handle Colt. The colt was actually the best tool because it was slim and sharpest. The Condor was good for cutting the top out and cleaning the inside.

Hey!!  Billy added to the Pumpkins

We have a pirate pumpkin and a Kitty Pumpkin!  Looks like they had some fun also!

Today is our last day to enter!

If we get a chance to get a pumpkin for the boys and get them carved I will post it on here. Suppose to start snowing tomorrow.

here is Mr. Jack-O-Lantern....
