Thank you Robert for reminding us that other countries make wonderful knives. Solingen knives are world famous, and I always wanted to try a French laguiole.  Like Frank (nibs), I picked up a couple Pumas while in Germany back in the 80s

If you like this pattern, look at this Schatt & Morgan 2001 Series XI carved peach bone baby (3 5/8" closed) sunfish knife (1 of 600). The master blade is etched with SCHATT & MORGAN 1 of 600; the blade tang is stamped S&M Titusville, PA on the front and Queen Cut Co Titusville PA on the back; the secondary blade is etched 2001 042265. The bolsters are nickel silver and it has the inlaid Keystone  shield.

 

And a rare (1 of 150) and exceptionally nice vintage Marbles Safety Axe Co. (MSA) “mini” (=baby) sunfish : stamped MSA CO. 03 Gladstone Mich USA;  Sambar Stag handles; blades : D-2; bolsters: nickel silver; liners: brass. Made Dec. 2003.

Thank you Howard for your support. I own knives from France, I really like them. I collect several brands from Germany too. I enjoy collecting knives from around the world. I hope this years knife will please a large number of our members. I know Miss Jan and the Staff, will come up with a winner. Quite a few members have expressed great ideas and this discussion has become educational, fun and interesting. Just like it should. Please keep the ideas coming and if you haven't posted yours, please do.

Referring to these numbers you guys are using (#23 lazered white bone)--what's your catalogue or whatever source you're getting the numbers?  I've got to learn how to take pictures with my phone and get them into the computer.  I'm paying for it--just never learned (never played video games, either.  You guys will see--time speeds up.

whats nice is the sooner you plan ahead...the more folks can afford a nicer knife.think if you released the 2013 knife now for sale in November...already how many more sales and knives made simply because folks can take the time to save.

if you have 9 months notice on a club knife.. all you need to do is save 17$ a month for 9 months

and you have 153$... a nice club knife really is so much about how much time we can give folks to save.

also,i have another point i would like to make{ i know ,i know...LOL} i buy club knives to benefit the club. I WAS HIGHLY OFFENDED when i heard IKC does not profit from their knife sales.{in the pst i can kind of understand} at the very least their should be no loss at all.ultimately the club knife is one of the ways for the club to maintain itself.sure IKC use to not be so jumping.WE HAVE A WONDERFUL NEW OWNER-JAN..WHO I PERSONALLY ADORE!! ...lets start with the simple thigs like dropped mail.lost posts,or slow or chats that dont even make it.the more membere,the more information going back and forth and picture storage and forums and this and that....all of this adds up somewhere$$$ ... IMO ..any fees collected though to ghelp the lcub should be disclosed.so the person buing the knife knows that $3.45 of each knife sold is going towards the IKC server to update of post drops and chat lag!!.... OK RAMBLIN..POST HIJACK....i hope folks agree... IKC is really starting to become a place i love..i want to see it flourish!...   alo i would love a good ole #23 LAZERED WHITE BONE...INSTEAD OF THE GEC .....IKC.... would be awesome!

Part II.  It might be a little off topic, so maybe Jan can open a discussion on it, but I learned from another club I belong to (Zippo Enthusiasts Network) that site upgrades and maintenance do cost.

I like Canoes too, Howard. These patterns are kind of sunfishes for the office, or for ladies...

This is good--if I were younger, I could say "cool" or even "awesome".  I CAN say this discussion is the Cat's Meow.

We talk kinda as if this is our last decision.  On that spreadsheet, let's start looking at alternatives for, say, 5 years.  That is an often-used planning period.  I've heard positive reactions to fixed blade, whittler or carver, big folder, little dress folder, fixed/fold match duo, different countries of origin by club members, assisted opening or lockback (how about two each year to avoid leaving anyone out?), honor or recognition (again and option would be Jan one year and our LE, FF, Armed Forces protectors maybe one year).  In the honor arena, the choices are endless--I'd like to see a WWII recognition--my dad flew over Normandy to prepare the way--not too many of these 8th AAC guys still around-or Iwo Jimo or...  So, if we choose a type (or two), then some spec to make them special to deserve the IKC mark, then a thought to honor someone else, then send that out for design/cost competition . . .  Well, maybe I should forget that--I'll be gone by then.

So, in the context of us designing our horse, please bear in mind that this is a process that takes time and patience. Everyone's suggestion and opinion will be taken into careful consideration and Jan will make every effort to get our Club the best knife possible at a price that everyone who wants one should reasonably be able to afford.

Bearing that in mind, please, trust the process and keep the thoughts and suggestions coming. Don't be afraid to ask questions -- This is your Club! And, as is the case with most things in life, you will get only as much out of it as you are willing to put into it. Let's keep a good positive energy going as we proceed further into this process. If we can all do that, then, I'm sure our patience and trust will be rewarded with a really nice iKC Club Knife for the year of 2013 -- One that we will all be proud to own!

LOL, Hold on Frank!  Your not going anywhere!  The back of our certificate saying in Honor of those who served would be a very nice touch and appropriate! We have a good many folks right here that either have parents that served or did service to their countries themselves

There have been a lot of good suggestions and some that would only appeal to a very limited few. You have said that you are keeping a spread sheet; perhaps you could turn that into a survey form for the members to vote on or just share it with us at some time in the future.

So many knives have been mentions that my head is spinning and my wallet is all puckered up and hiding in a corner. Although I would buy it, my first choice would NOT be another whittler. You asked if there are other makes that may be put in the running. I think you might be interested in the knives the Moore family produce. Their web address is www.mooremaker.com. Their prices seem reasonable and if you want I'll SACRIFICE myself and buy one of their knives for a review.

I would be the first in line to buy a Chris Reeve Nyala, but I think that with etching we would be looking at the $300 range and for those on a financial or mental budget it would be a show stopper.

I haven't purchased anything from Canal Street in a while and their initial offerings seem a little shaky, anyone have any knowledge on them?

And finally for all those members that are lurking out there; what's your opinion?

Thanks, but we're all going someplace, and I, for one, have a very specific destination in mind.  My Doctor keeps telling me to slow down, but I doubt that will happen, so I'll get there maybe sooner than some, and I won't be sad about it then.  I'm inside today because I'm supposed to have my foot propped post surgery, but I'm going back out to the shop in a little while.  I'd like to see our Protectors honored whenever possible--Fire fighters and police in the same category as armed forces.  Anyone who has stood by a buddy staring death in the face knows that no one else will ever understand, but we cannot say thanks with just a paycheck and a free grave marker (and derisive comments or worse when one of them (us) shows just a little human weakness).  Soapboxes are everywhere, aren't they?  But again, thanks for your response.  f
