I just picked up a TAK1 recently & I really, really love it!  Ontario was one of my "gateway" brands to knife collecting (with an FF6, I believe) & I still have a thing for them.  I just can't believe it took me so many years to pick this knife up!

  • Jan Carter

That is the one I have been looking at DLFG.

Who wants to see me awkwardly explain our new products? I think I may have also said "5160 stainless," which is not a thing that exists. We only did the one take, so I think it's actually not too bad.

You did fine Drew!  Thanks for reminding us what a great knife Ontario makes!

Andrew -- WHEN?!?!  I was tempted by the smaller Kephart style knife, but even moreso by that utility clip-point!  And then there's that naked SP50-style chopper!  When oh when will they be released?  :)

Jan, the TAK1 is larger than I originally thought it would be -- but not incredibly huge, just decent-sized.  And I really like the way it feels in hand.  It's definitely an all-arounder.  I can't wait to get it outside & beat it up!  :)

    Steve,

I'm going to hope that someone else can weigh in here since I'm obviously biased. That said, as for people who have used that machete - the US Armed forces for the past 73 years.

  • Max McGruder

This one doesn't have a canvas sheath.

  • Jan Carter

Be sure to check out the SALE Andrew listed it is great.  A rat for less than 20.00????  I am IN!

After seeing a fellow forum members Ontario reproduction M3, I just had to order one, can't wait for it to arrive. I wonder if these are still being made?

    That be it...

  • Alan

Wonder if you could find out a little history behind Ontarios reason to build these  knives. Thanks, Alan.

  • Tobias Gibson

I've been curious as well.  I assumed Ontario started making these when Camillus closed its doors in 2007 but  we all know where assuming gets people.

I thought at this time, Ontario was contracted to the M7 Bayonets for the M16 rifles and bought the Camillus equipment.  (The blade blanks for the M7 and M3 are nearly identical.) But again, I could be wrong.   Ontario may have been making M7 bayonets for decades for all I know!

The leather sheath that comes with the Ontario M3 looks identical to the leather Camillus sheaths that were used from at least the 1970s until they closed.

I've always assumed that the reason Ontario made them was the same reason Camillus continued to make them long after the  military end the contract.  People just keep buying them!

  • Alan

Hot-Dog, my M3 just arrived, I will wait to open it when I can take pics to share. I will have to wait until I have free time at work....

  • Jan Carter

Fantastic Alan, Cant wait to hear your thoughts on it!

  • Alan

Well,  from my initial inspection, I'm impressed, from the packaging of the knife, the fit and finish and quality of the materials is spot on. I hope to never have to review this as to how well it performed of course. I know it is a short review and the pics may not be the best, but it's the best I can do at the moment. In shot, I am well satisfied.

  • Tobias Gibson

Lucky.  When I bought mine it was blulk packaged in a plastic bag.  That' said, I've been very happy with it.

  • Alan

I guess the box was a nice touch, but the contents were the main thing,  so to speak.

  • KnifeMaker

    Andrew Yates

I asked and got a pretty short story about the Trench Knife. After Camillus closed, we ended up with the equipment used for that pattern.

  • Alan

Thanks, Andrew, for the info. Collectors may appreciate this info also.

  • Jan Carter

I just loved the pic LOL

Question, is the pilot survival  knife still made for government issue? And does it have a NSN ? thanks.

    dead_left_knife_guy

    I love my RD-4 (yep, that's 1095, with orange G-10 scales)...

  • Tobias Gibson

    Alan aked:

Question, is the pilot survival  knife still made for government issue? And does it have a NSN ? thanks.

Alan, as far as I know the the old Jet Pilot knife is still in inventory however it was succeeded by the newer ASEK. (Aircrew Survival Egress Knife)

    See:  https://ontarioknife.com/fixed-blades/tactical2013-09-03-16-56-57/a...

    NSN: 1095-01-518-6832

The 499 survival knife is sold on base  and still has an NSN:  7340-00-098-4327

When my wife's fiance went through SERE training the knife he encountered was the ASEK.

  • Alan

Thank you Tobias, good to know that. By the way, do you think the current ones will someday be collectors items?

  • Tobias Gibson

Obviously, it is anybody's guess but the track record suggest if it is an item issued by the military it will eventually be collected.  The real question is will the value increase or decrease.

  • Alan

Yeah, good point, since I don't have esp, we will have to wait and see.

  • KnifeMaker

    Andrew Yates

There's not much to add except to say that it looks like Tobias nailed it. It seems to me sometimes when I look at some of our products that have been around a long time (generations, really) that one day there will be nothing but cockroaches, 499s and Old Hickory.

  • Steve Scheuerman (Manx)

I'd love to try out a set of those Night Stalkers! Good looking knives there. Would be fun to put those through some paces.

  • Alan

I think I may pick one up , maybe would make a good general purpose work/camp knife
