I am married to a wonderful women who lets me pursue my passions. I have been collecting knives for years but i just started to make my own knives in 2008 and i have a lot of questions. I joined this site to get some advice and to hone my skills. Right now i make fixed blade knives, and I prefer using stag, and deer bone for the handles. I work in construction doing renovations, decks, and add ons.
Interests
Making and assembling knives, deer hunting both gun and bow, fishing and fly fishing whenever I get a chance.

jeff,
i start out grinding blade on 80 grit burr king grinder. then start hand sanding with 120grit from plung line to tip to get out dips bumps, lumps. go to 220, 320, 400,600, 800, 1000. usely stop there. for working knives stop at 400 grit. in first 4 grits i use 2'' shop roll cloth. then 400grit up i use auto body black flint sand paper wet dry. change paper as soon as it loads up and quits cutting . on final grit use a little kerosene to make steel pop. as for wood, i like stabilized wood just sand and buff. as for all others stay on wood not steel and you will not get steel dust in wood pores. as for budget we are all on one. i go and set up at 5 large knife shows a year and always look for handle material. there is always inexpensive bone, stag, horn , wood, macarta there. i have a lot of handle material in stock last count about 5000 sets. i can sell you some of the stuff i do not use any more. you will just have to come down and dig thru it all . jeff
