I am married to a wonderful women who lets me pursue my passions. I have been collecting knives for years but i just started to make my own knives in 2008 and i have a lot of questions. I joined this site to get some advice and to hone my skills. Right now i make fixed blade knives, and I prefer using stag, and deer bone for the handles. I work in construction doing renovations, decks, and add ons.
Interests
Making and assembling knives, deer hunting both gun and bow, fishing and fly fishing whenever I get a chance.
Just an experiment i want to make a small neck knife with madrone wood scales. Thanks for the offer i might have a bunch of questions when i secure the materials.
jeff, knifemakers guild show was great time. meet ken coats knifemaker of ikc. lots of supplies there was over 10 vendors there. bought stag. pearl, tortise shell, lots of belts 3m. a few books. and maybe another burr king grinder variable speed. working out a price on grinder hope to have it soon. went down all 3 days. it will be at sealback hotel next 5 years.
Hey man, yeah I was able to go. It was really cool, i talked to some very nice and fun knife makers, there were some beautiful knives. I didnt buy anything, nothing that fit my price range was particularly interesting, but it was an awesome experience.
Jeff, Sunday was actually busier than Sat.....which normally is not the case at most shows....I was swamped (in a good way). I handed out alot of iKC flyers Sunday...should get a few members from it. Overall...a pretty good show....I have already booked tables for the Feb. show next year. Talk soon...I need to get some sleep!!!!
HI Jeff: Thanks for posting. Glad to hear you started making knives. Thank you for the compliments on my work. I am in upstate NY. Where are you located?
I have been at it about 12 years. One bit of advice, Is forge and make what you love making to start. Focus on a certain blade design until you get it down. Keep it simple. Make sure you work on a good hardening and tempering technique. Almost every maker has there own way of doing this, or own little technique they have developed. Hope this helps.

actually i haven't been to smoky mountain knife works but i was jealous because my friend tyler went there over the summer to visit family and he got a knife there...he has a profile on this website...i told him about it and i got him hooked on knives too..check out his knives...his username is tyler r roush
jeff, yes i got grinder and got it unpacked was like new. been working 10 hrs days at work not much time at home. like your new knife flows realy well and nose cap realy sets it off. just keeps geting better and better. keep up good work.
yeah, i know. I havnt been doing much online lately in forum participation. School is starting to pick up and I have been working as much as possible lately... Plus I bought Left 4 Dead (Computer game) and that has been occupying most of my free time. But Ill be back up and posting next week sometime. Thanks for the notice... And no actually, no new dusters. I am out of aluminum for 4 fingered sets, I am waiting for inspiration before I continue, but I have been thinking up some more 2 finger designs... It will be awhile before I make any more though. I need a drill press and band saw, that is kind of what I am waiting for. I just keep checking craigs list.
jeff,
you keep impressing me with your thoughts, like bone handle files. when you buy handle materail you have to use it all and sell it all that is a great way to make a little money on side. a set of files on your table with some of your knives. told you that 100.00 box of bone will make you 1000.00 back if you use it right. you are getting the knifemakers eye just becouse it is not a knife handle use it on file, screwdriver, small hammer, ect. people love that kind of stuff becouse you do not see it any were else and you can sell it lower price than a knife. keep up good work jeff
Hello Jeff,
Thanks for the compliment on my grinder. I know Jeff from name only. We've never met but you can bet I would be visiting him too if we lived closer.
I've been making knives since late 80's. I have never tried to quit but I doubt that I could. It gets in the blood I think.
I like to make muzzle loading pistols too.
Yeah... 2days!...I'm leaving tomorrow around 12:30 my time ...we will be setting up in the afternoon. I'm holding that "pink" knife for you so you can buy it for your wife!....LOL
Check out my editorial on CutleryNewsJournal. It's linked to the community's homepage. While I don't use your name I talk about you and what you've done with your group and here at iKC. I'm making about point about how real our community is and that it is a "knife club." www.cutlerynewsjournal.com
My pleasure...just don't know if I will turn it into a user...it's good size for most of my activities or keep it in my collection. I really liked that knife from the first day you posted a pic of it.....so thanks for selling it to me.
Yes, Sheila and I will be there all 3 days....this has been a busy week...I did some work for a friend of mine that is the roofing business....I was on about 16 different roofs that were 60 to 70 square each...I had to measure them out and put together a materials list..box vents, flashing, step flashing, drip edge, gutter edge, vent boots...ect. I'm wore out and very sore...I have blisters on both of my feet!
Dang!...thats why I leave the hard work/labor for you young bucks...LOL. I'm to old to be roofing. Just getting up on the roofs and making measurements is enough for me. I was on some roofs this week with some pretty steep pitches...I'm thankful that I have Cougar paw boots...they are like suction cups when walking on roofs.
Jeff,
I find a clip-art pic, that I like and save it to my picture file. Basic editing can be done in "Paint" . You can also add text also. For the 3-D effects and resizing I use IrfanView, a free photo editing program. There are other programs that you can get, but I'm satisfied with the results of IrfanView. I've also been known to do some editing on PhotoBucket.
Jeff, Thank you very much for the kind words and complements. This sight is awesome and Im happy to have found it.
Im taking a peak at some of your work and its exceptional..

The folder with the scim was made by my friend.. But it sure is a great little knife! I just love the scrim and the bolster flows so well with the entire knife.. Its truly supurb!
hey jeff, to make a good knife is a 5 step process, research, design, a master bladesmith, a master handle maker and a sheath maker. i make high quality knives. always limited edition using exotic handles. steels vary depending on what you want the knife to be. high price knives are not selling in this economy so be competitive. i sell through local outlets hope this helps a little
choctaw warrior.....i have several more but these are some samples the bowie knife is cinsidered bt most historians to be historically correct of the knife jim bowie carried at the battle of the alamo
pretty good how are you doing?..i think i might have broken my pinky toe yesterday by bumping it and i'm goin to get it xrayed tomorrow knock on wood hope it's alright!...i am sending an old rh pal (early remngton company) blade to bruce godlesky to put a handle on it..hope he can do something with it's good steel
Jeff, The L.T. Wright Pre-Blind Horse knife sold for $185.00 and that was 6 years ago before Blind Horse was even in business. I showed that knife to L.T. at a recent show and thats why I know the info that I know on it. To someone who collects Blind Horse knives...it would be hard to say what the knife would bring...so in my eyes it's worth at least the original price of $185.00. Probably alot more to a collector of Blind Horse knives.
