Yeah Robert I'd say your right. Them big boars are tough as hell. They sure do make for some good eating though.

    EXCELLENT CHOICE

  • Jim Thompson

Robert, the handles on the Muskrat is a smooth blue bone on which I assume Case laser etched the desigh and filled with black. Max McGruder posted a pix of a pattern handled this way. I did some research and found that Case released these in the fall of 2011 and one of the patterns was a muskrat. I was able to find one on ebay & add it to my muskrat collection. I have not been able to find out how many of each pattern was handled this way. The design is unique & I hope that a very limited number were produced.

  • Ron Cooper

thanks, robert! i'm honored to be your friend.

  • Ron Cooper

if i get a chance i'll take some stix pix later today.

  • Ron Cooper

rob, here are a few pix of some stix that i have been working on lately...

as you can see they are all in various stages of work. the cane is done and it came from a crepe myrtle tree. the handle fits perfectly in my hand and feels really natural. ergonomically correct i guess you'd say. the one on the far left is also done, and i won't even comment on what it looks like -- it just turned out that way. the one i left the bark on, left of the cane, was a much taller staff at first. i recently chopped it down to feel more like a shillelagh. the one on the far right is a real nice section of eucalyptus and is about 6 feet long. it will be my next project and hopefully a nice staff. the one to the right of the cane is red oak and already has tung oil on it. it feels perfect just as it is. it is quite heavy! the one second from the left is one that i have been working on a lot lately even though it might not look like it. i'm not sure what kind of wood it is because i found it laying nowhere near any trees and was actually from the same large broken branch as the one just left of it. the one i call the phallus erectus stick. (i hope that description falls within our G rating policy?). anyway, it is headed for a life as a shillelagh, also.

here are some different angles of these...

so, that's what i have on hand right now. usually as soon as i finish one of my stix i give it to one of my friends. my enjoyment comes from skinning, carving and sanding the wood. it's therapeutic for me in the evening to plop myself down in front of the boob tube and work on my wood.

i enjoy just sitting and sanding. here is a small piece of very old and extremely hard apricot wood that i was playing with last night. i have sanded it down to 2000 grit and i doubt that it will show in a picture, but it has a mirror-like finish on it. i call items like that worry wood, much like worry stones. they are soothing just to roll around in your hand.

i hope all this gives you some idea of my very simple projects. nothin' fancy. just keeping my hands busy.

    cheers!

very nice work on the canes rob.....

  • William A. Burns

Thanks Robert. I generally like wood scales, but there is something about the texture of this giraffe bone that is unusually pleasant...

  • Lee Saunders

Good eye Robert!  Didn't think anyone would be able to see that.

hello rob,  got out of hospital this afternoon and headed straight for the lap top.  The best man for your knife is Eugene Blankenship who lives in Milan ,  Tn.   .  He had a stroke a way back and could have retired.  He's the best in the country.  He did all Boker returns alot from Remington.  His phone # is 731-723-7575.  He did my work and it was the best.

Hope this helps !  "GO REMINGTON"  (  WESTERN TOO!)  lou

I understand Robert.  They scare me too because even though I know a little and I have books to help me, it would be easy to fool me.

I tend to buy pocketknives in the $50 and under range for that reason, although sometimes I fall in love with a $100 knife.

My switchblades scare me more because they are more expensive.  But I understand the prices.  There are fewer of them (American) because of the ban on making switchblades.  And even fewer still because of the more complicated mechanics of switchblades.  The springs tend to break and we don't seen to have many old-timers that can fix them anymore.

If you want I can send you a list of the books that I use to help me determine if a knife is the real deal and if the value is in the right range.

I think that's the best any of us can do, except the guys on here that are bona-fide experts.

And sometimes I get a real deal.  I was going thru a stack of recent knives (it was a real stack!) to take pics and post here when I realized  I bought a few knives at really good prices:

    • Colonial Hawkbill for $8.49 + $3.99 shipping
    • Unknown maker Sailors Knife for $11.11 + $free shipping

The rest in the stack are $25 to $50 each, and while I can't afford to lose $25 anymore than the next guy I figure I can always sell them.  If I sell them for less and acknowledge the co ndition is bad, or it's a fake or whatever, then at least i don't chaet a guy and I make some of my money back.

Anyway, if you want to know what I use...let me know.

  • Jan Carter

I am here for you buddy.  Let me see what I can do

  • Lee Saunders

You might be the strawberry capitol no Robert.  California used to be the capitol for everything in the Sacramento.San Jaoquin Valley, but now it seems like all we grow is houses and people!

Not like it was when I was a kid.  The valley was all tomatoes, straberries, corn, melons, etc  And off to the east cotton.  People never realized how much cotton we grew.  Heck, we still grow a ton of cotton!  A ton of fruit & vegetables too!

But we may not be the strawberry capitol anymore!!

I don't even think we are the hot rod capitol anymore.
