Thanks for the add and the comments on my pits, Randy.
What do they call you around home? Junior?
After I got married, there were 4 Johns in the family. Got confusing at times.
Again welcome aboard.
Well Jr.,
What your dad said is mostly true. Been carving monkeys so long I can usually look at a pit and pretty much tell what it will look like, IF there is a monkey in there. I've found out that only 5-10% of the pits will make a good monkey. Fortunately, almost all of the rest can make a good basket. I even keep the split pits to make hat-pins with.
Hey Randy
Sorry for the delay in stopping by- but thanks for joining our collector community. What kept you? :)
Do you collector or just make knives? Got a lot of makers here too, in fact, check out the Knifemakers Group.
If you have any questions, let me know
Welcome
Scott
I was simply curious .. I believe some folks are doing "pattern welding" more for the resultant pattern than anything else .. choosing steels that will contrast against one another .. w/ more emphasis placed o the "art" than the "usability" of the result ..
.. as opposed to choosing steels that contrast with one another .. AND .. result in a billet that can be hardened to the level required for "cutlery steel" ..
happy birthday randy jr.you have made alot of great knives with you dad and we learn a little each time you and your father makes a knife thanks for being here with us at ikc and keep up the good work sir..have a great birthday jr.
