Point me to a good Machete

I would love a recommendation on a good machete under $50 dollars. Also is there anything else I need to go along with my new machete?

Thanks,
Jake

I'v been looking at the cold steels. But how do you go about putting an edge on those curved blades? I really would only used it maybe 5-10 times a year. The key here needs to be low cost. The lower it is the sooner I could buy it.

ake, first on ebay or at an import tool store, buy a Tramontina brand short machete, 12-14in blade, plain blonde wood handle. Pay no more than $10, or $15 with sheath. Sharpen it until it will slice an index card like a good knide. Use it as a machete. Then get back with me. You'll know a lot more about machetes then, and youyr first one will be one of the best. Then we'll start getting into the topic in more detail.

I have to say that I am very impressed with Cold Steel's machetes. I am a Filipino Martial Arts instructor so I purchased the 18" and 12" Barong Machetes from CS and I was surprised by my reaction to them. I own a lot of blades and I have to say that these inexpensive machetes quickly shot to the top of my favorites list. I bought them for training and demonstration of my Escrima, but I've used them extensively on my property for trimming and even chopping limbs. I love those things.

I use a puck stone for all my utility edges (axes, hatchets and machetes.)

The Cold Steel and Tramontina machetes are good for me. The Cold Steel Kukri machete is an outstanding chopper!

I used a barong machete to kill a 4m king cobra that rared up in my face on a trail in Antipolo, a far suburb of SW Manila back in 1995. Skin is on my wall. Machete is in my day pack. Good solid knife. Dont forget the classic 12" blade Tramontina machete — best blade in the world, pound for dollar.

I also will tell you that the Cold Steel Kukhri machete is a great path-clearer/chopper.At around $20 it is not pricey, but it is quality. You get the edge sharp and it will cut any wood or shrub in front of it.If you don't feel confident to sharpen it,go to a butcher at a grocery store or your knife/gun store, and for $5 they will put a great edge on it.Happy Trails!!

I have my Ontario machete for ages. And still love it. They might not have the same model now. But you should check them out as well I think.

Hey Andy, Why doesn't anyone mention the old Collins US amrked machetes from WWII. I've been using an old Collins with USMC 1942 markings for the last 20+ years on the deer lease in south Texas. Great piece of steel!

So did u get a machete yet?

Reply by Jake on September 3, 2010 at 22:38

Nope, I have put it off because I don't "need it". I got some more knives a couple flashlights and such and ammo, most extra money goes to ammo for my shooting hobby.
