Charles,

They are releasing a new pistol this month, the R51. I really want one for a carry gun for my wife. It is a redesign of an old model, the 51. Check it out and see what you think. I wish I lived closer, I would love to work for Remington.

After reading this review, I don't think I would recommend it for a lady.  I personally have no experience with it but this review raises serious questions in my mind.  What do you think?

So far the Remington R51 has received mediocre reviews. Would recommend the Ruger LC9 over the R51. Based solely on reviews the Ruger outshines the R51. Don't buy it! I've shot the LC9 and like it.

I'm glad Huntsville will get a Remington plant. Congratulations! It'll be good for the people there and that translates into economic prosperity.

Of course I'm a little prejudiced against anything Remington (except their knives I guess). It's not Remington per se but their parent company. The buy firearms manufacturers and close down the plants, then build guns in Remington plants with different names on them. Locally they bought Marlin Firearms and closed it down in two years.

Michael, I agree with you on the LC9 over the R51.  I don't have an LC9 but I do own several Rugers.  They are all good guns. I do have a Ruger LCP .380.  I like it.  The LC9 isn't a whole lot bigger than the LCP.  Based on the review that I posted the link to above, the LC9 should be more comfortable to shoot than the R51.

In regard to the Marlin closing, I have heard that the Remington Marlins don't have the quality of the old Marlins.  I can't say from personal experience because my only Marlin is a 39A Golden Mountie of 1967 vintage.  It is a fine gun.  It has had many thousands of rounds fired through it and is still a great gun.

LC9 hands down. Solid, dependable and eats anything.

Kool that Rem is moving south - good on them and AL.

Hate the Marlin issue - sure miss my old .35 Trapper Model.

So far I have read about 20 reviews, both pro and con. And by and large it, like any other firearm, has it advocates and protagonists. What I have found is this: Any firearm from a reputable company is a viable defense weapon. And some will like it and some will not. I, personally, like what I have read about the design of the R51. It is a concept that meets the times. I still want to see what it is really like when released. And my final decision will be made when that time comes. I may hate it when I handle it. I am not a fan of .380s nor 9mms, though both have their niche. I have carried both, professionally and privately. But my wife does not like to shoot what I like to shoot. And to all my friends on ikc, I value and respect your opinions and views. Now let's go out and punch some holes!

Jess, you are right.  Each person needs to get what they are comfortable with, not what the "experts" say they should get.  Reviews can help but in the end it is an individual choice.  What fits one person's hand might not fit another at all.  Some can handle more recoil than others.  I always recommend at least handling different guns and if at all possible shooting before you buy.  Maybe go to a range where you can rent guns or if you have a friend that can let you shoot his.

And we definitely need to get out and punch some holes.  The last gun smoke I smelled was on Dec. 4th when I killed Bambi.  And it is hazardous to your health to not smell gun smoke on  a regular basis.

F   Y   I..............Gun Tests magazine (like a Consumer Reports magazine in the gun world - no advertisements) gave the Remington R51 pistol an A rating and immediately caught flak for it.

Right after the test Remington started to offer exchanges for the first generation of R51s so Gun Tests now says it's a don't buy and they'll grade it "Incomplete". Their field test pistol worked fine but the magazine returned it for an exchange. Now it's wait and see for the next test.
