Knife storage

Being a novice knife collector, I do not know how to properly store my folders.
I would like to be able to see them without unwrapping them. Any suggestions without breaking my budget?

Ted-- here are a couple of suggestions-- This is what I use for most of mine http://iknifecollector.com/profiles/blogs/my-new-knife-chest-full-a... It is actually an 8 drawer wooden tool chest from Harbor Freight Tools--Sells for around $79.99. Holds a lot of knives, is lockable, and all compartments are felt lined--Another option would be a shadow box type display- I use these as well--You can find them with shelves for hanging on a wall with or without a glass front--They also have table top versions with glass tops and a hinged lid that is lockable.Most of mine were around $20-30 dollars. A couple of things to remember-- If you have any old knives with celluloid handles, keep them separate from your other knives---They can "gas off" and rust a carbon steel blade overnight-- The gassing can rust out any other knives in proximity. If you have any knives in leather sheaths, don't store them in the sheath for extended periods of time.Oil your knives once or twice a year and enjoy.I also use Flitz metal polish on mine to keep the metal shining and protected. Here are a couple of examples- BTW, the shadow box pic are just some knives I threw together to give you an idea-- it actually holds a lot of folders.

Check the dollar stores for miniature art easels. They are cheap, and don't look half bad for displays. I use about 8 of them right now, and am buying more. And I need a new bookshelf too, darn it.

We have the same box and because we are in FL we put the small silicon packets in each drawer to keep the moisture low

Ted, There are many options for storing knives. I am not sure what concerns you might have with storing them. Some people worry about them displayed in plain sight, in fear that someone will see them and try to steal them. Others worry that having them exposed to light, especially direct sunlight will fade or discolor them. If you do not have any of these concerns, you could display them in a glass or Lexan front case. This will keep the dust from them and allow you to look at them when ever you please (that is how I display mine). If you would rather hide them from the light and others, so you can see them when you want, you could follow John and Jan's advice, by putting them in a box with drawers and some type of moisture absorbent. Here are some pics of displays like I have mine in. I do keep mine in a room where they are not exposed to direct sunlight (They are on south and west walls).

I collect Kabars and WWII knives and its a problem with space.I love that wood chest John but I'd need one the size of a Semi Trailor.:)I pretty much lay mine on shelves on top of their sheaths. Yes,leather and knives are not friends. It reacts with the brass worse than the steel sometimes. Good discussion,we all run into problems displaying and keeping our in shape.

So true , knives in boxes, and on shelves. Fixed Blades are a real issue with sheaths. What do you do with a fixedblade knife that you dont want to separate from the sheath?

Thats a good question Hog, even in the safe the leather takes up space but I hate not to have the sheath protected if I felt like the knife needed to be in the safe

I like mine out where I can see and touch them. Keep them oiled. Put felt spacers between blade and sheath on fixed blades displayed with sheath.

Great looking collection Phill! When I put too many knives out my wife collects them.She has this misinformation that one whole room full of knives is plenty.
