Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

Has anyone done anything to get ready for a "Solar Flare Up" that may damage the electrical grid on planet earth for anywhere from 3 months to 10 years? The prediction is for late December of 2012. Food, water, protection and a wide variety of essentials will be needed if this comes to pass. I don't want to scare anyone but I would like for everyone to look at what has been said and prepare if they think it is to their best interest. I would like to know ya'll idea's on this subject and what your plans might be.

Robert,

That is actually how we supply for hurricanes.  I do the buy 1 get 1 sales on things we actually would eat anyway.  One goes in the cupboard, 1 goes in a cooler that just stores canned food for the season.  At the end of hurricane season, those go in the cupboard.  First things first if a storm hits.  If we are going to be without electric for three or more days....Cook the perishables in the freezer using the grill.  Use available Ice to store and those are the first items on the menu, then canned goods

so, this may sound like a silly question but will places like Hoover dam still produce electricity?

Jan....

Yes!  Coal fired plants as well.  These places all have contingency plans.

The last time a hurricane knocked out our electricity, they used a desiel generator to run the water pumps to give all the house holds water. I also heard that they have a warning system in place so that incase of a solar flare up, they would have time to turn off the electrical grid, so not to damage it too badly.

I hope that is the case Robert, but it does sound like some places will still be ok

Well now that is a really good idea, I do hope they can turn it off in time and someone is not asleep at the switch!

We always have a few cases of water on hand, I drink it like crazy.  For bathing, we always have the pool :)

Sun unleashes huge solar flare; possible Earth-bound solar storm

See new, updated blog post: Onslaught of solar flares bring space weather storms to Earth

Between 7 and 8 p.m.Tuesday night, the sun spit out a large, X5-class solar flare. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center called it “one of the largest solar flares of the current solar cycle.”

X class flares are the strongest category of solar flares. According to NASA, they can trigger planet-wide radio blackouts and long-lasting radiation storms.

These flares are often complemented by phenomena known as coronal mass ejections (CME) which are essentially bursts of solar wind. If a CME is directed toward the Earth, a geomagnetic storm results that can interfere with the Earth’s magnetosphere.

NOAA said predictions for this particular flare/CME event “are still being refined.”

SpaceWeather.com wouldn’t draw any conclusions about where the CME might go.

“First-look data from STEREO-B are not sufficient to determine if the cloud is heading for Earth,” it said.

Its “best guess” was that CME probably won’t directly head for Earth, but rather produce a “glancing blow” on March 8 or 9.

Here’s a video from NASA showing the flare:

Via NASARight at midnight UT time the active region 1429 unleashed a powerful X5.4-class solar flare.

A significant solar storm can disrupt satellites, communications systems, and, in some cases, ground-based technologies and power grids. These storms also are conducive to auroras, especially at high latitudes. We will keep you posted on the predictions for this event as they are fine tuned and it draws closer.

Clint can you give the longitude and latitude of that 2000 acres...you may need some help. I also have wondered if there is a solar flare and the power is out what happens to all the bad ass people that are in the prisons if there no electricity to keep the doors locked? Anyone have any ideals on this? Do the guards who have no food and water leave and lock the doors or just shoot everyone of them or let them starve? Just something I've wondered about?

I'm looking to buy a couple of good survival type knives. I have several odd knives but am looking for a couple of really good ones . can anyone steer me in the right direction.

I'm sure people with money can give you some expensive options, but for me, it's the K-Bar and Beckers. Very affordable and hard working. Both can be had in different sizes depending on your needs.

I like the old K-bar type fighting knife and the Becker BK9.

Ron...

You have to set down and figure out what the primary use of the knife is for and then chose from them.  Remember, cheep knives are just that and will let you down at the worst time.  I would check out the TOPS web site as they have many and are very good for a mid range.  Pto-Tech Brend #1 combat knife would be the best top of the line and would not let you down.
