John you did an amazing job researching this!  I attached a blurb from the 1998 "Goins Encyclopedia" but that was all I found.  


I would love to hear it's tales of all it has done!

Jason- After rereading this discussion it occurred to me that although we have given you a great deal of information we had failed to tell you what kind of knife it is-It appears to be a sailors rope knife-- It was used for cutting rope  for rigging etc. on ships, especially on sailing vessels. Would love to know how you acquired this gem, and if you know of a relationship to a sailing history.
