Well, I hope those gators are sleeping right now. I was trying to get a shot at a deer. There was alot of ducks that passed and one Otter, but no deer. The hot wheather has slowed our deer hunting down.

That is a good looking bayou.  I see a dozen places for a gator to hide well

I thought I'd post a couple of hunting pictures of the area I hunt. This is Bayou Jack, a little bayou in the northern  end of the Atchafalaya Basin. This little bayou runs through the area I hunt, connected to alot of little lakes and swamps.

Is anyone thinking of making it to this show?

Johnny,

I am hoping the buck has come your way.

Paul, the picture you share with the harvested buck and how you have used all he had to give is awesome.  I don't hunt but I love a good hunt story and pics.  I believe in hunting, it is a way of life for many.  I know many that support the needs of their families by hunting and fishing.  Thanks for sharing a great story and some wonderful pictures

Wow Paul, great story about a great hunt, thanks. Every hunt that ends in enjoyment of the experience of the time spent in the great outdoors is a "Successful Hunt". I wish we would all post pictures of our hunts, with or without a animal that was harvested. Please, everyone lets take some great pictures of the great outdoors and post them on here for everyone to see. I promise, to do the same. I want to wish everyone good and safe hunting.

Good luck Johnny. You take some great photos and I can't wait to see your latest. Your photos have inspired me so much that I ordered a new camera and I am looking forward to learning more about photography and how to take photos like some of those you have shared with us! Some of your knife photos are spectacular my friend.

Cool photos of the antelope too Rusty. I hear they are a challenge to hunt and  get near to.

Hey Robert! Bummer about that miss. You must be quite the sportsman to even attempt a shot like that. My story behind the deer is not too eventful. I was hunting at a small 300 acre ranch in the Texas hill country about 2 hours west of Austin near Menard. I hunted out of a blind. The first evening all I saw was does so I passed on a shot. My buddy (and neighbor) got a spike. It was his first deer since he was a kid and I was happy to see him get one and be a part of that. I showed him how to gut it and skin it. The next morning I saw some does hanging around the feeder but not right at it. It wasn't long before my 7 point buck walked out. One of his eye guards was broken off or he would have been a nice 8 point, or 4x4 as they call them in some other states. I shot him right behind the shoulder at about 85yards with my .257 Weatherby Mag. He ran about 50 yards.

In Texas there is very little public land so to hunt, you either have to know someone with property to hunt on or lease land from a land owner. It is standard practice here to hunt from a blind with a corn feeder about 80-100 yards away. That has been an adjustment for me after hunting the Cascade mountains for 20 years where I would hike 15 miles a day and pack out, a piece at a time, any game that was harvested. I was once charged by a bear while archery hunting deer. He charged within 30 feet of me and stood on his hind quarters seeming to challenge me. Never being a great wrestler, I took him with an arrow. Then there was the time I took an elk at 637 yards with my 7mm RUM. This shot was only attempted because I hand loaded all of my own ammo and spent many hours at the range shooting and studying the ballistics of my rifle, preparing myself for a shot like that if it ever presented itself.

Anyway....the knife in the picture is a R.W. Wilson with a stag handle. I finally replaced my old timer fixed blade that I have been using for years. Or maybe I just added a new tool to my collection of users. Time will tell. I sure have a lot of memories with that old timer of mine.

Hey, good luck Johnny, I hope you bag a good one. Heck, I'm ready to fill my doe tag, we need the meat. It's where our ground meat for the year comes from.

Hey Guys, I have lots to share with you all, I just need to find time to put it to words. As of right now I am still without a buck. I'm working 2nd shift so my mornings are devoted to hunting right now.

Wish me luck and be safe.
