Queen Cutlery ... under new ownership.

It's now official .. Queen Cutlery is under new ownership ..  Kenneth R. Daniels, Daniels Family Cutlery Corp.

I have a deep appreciation for my Queen Cutlery. They always seemed @ the forefront of materials,  i.e. I've some very traditional models with sweet D2 blades.

I'm starting this blog in hopes of tallying .. from 'us' collectors .. some "hopes & expectations" .. for the new owners. I'm sure they've the appropriate business plan in place ...BUT...  here's a place to list some personal preferences.

One I've heard already is ... better/stronger nail pulls.

I personally hope they continue with a "value line" marketed under the Queen Cutlery name

...............   AND   ...............

continue a higher end product such as currently marketed under the Schatt & Morgan name.

What do you think ?!?

    Dale,

I agree.  I am excited for Ken Daniels and the Daniels family.  I too hope they continue to carry all ends of the lines but I believe that is the thought process. I know Ryan will be having a Queen Group started here very soon.  I agree with the nail pulls and I have had heard a lot about the consistency of quality issue.  In talking to Ken when this was just beginning, he stated to me that would be something he addressed.  I just hope folks understand that changing the current dynamic is not something that will happen within the next few weeks.  I expect by the time everything settles in, it will take a short while to get things the way he wants them for his company and for us.

Let's hear the ideas!  We have the ears!

    Thanks, Jan.

I have noted a variation in the fit-n-finish of the newer (late 80's & on) Queen I've owned. I too hope that is something not only addressed  ...but, also...  maintained as time goes on.

I know the old Queen was capable of such .. they private labeled for many a company .. 'n usually short run higher end product. Sooo, I know the capacity exists. Time will tell w/ the new owners.

'n yes .. we all need to be patient .. nothing happens overnight.

Suggestions .. personal comments .. post away !!!

will the tuna cutlery come out of the same place?if so will the same attention be placed on both lines?

    @  stephen

That's a question best addressed by Ryan .. whom I've invited to this discussion ...BUT... I'm sure he's somewhat busy @ the moment. I hope he does field some questions/answers here.

Also, keep in mind ...  they probably don't have all the answers .. yet.

In the meantime .. keep the quest & suggestions coming. This soon in the game .. "we" collectors might have a valid chance @ some input.

I haven't bought a Queen in over 20 years. Every time I think about getting one I read tons of guys all over the net saying the quality is really hit and miss. So I don't bother. If they get their quality up consistently I'll buy them.

I was selling Queen knives back in the 80's when most people didn't know what the heck Queen was! Guys would come up at gun and knife shows and ask "What kind of knives are those?", I'd say "Queen" and they'd say "You're kidding, right?!" LOL! Then I'd have to explain their name to them and then they were okay with it! LOL!

I've never experienced a QUALITY problem. I have noticed that not every single unit received the same level of FINISH.  But, never a quality problem.

I use most of my Queen .. except for my older schtuff ....

........................ soooo .. only required the quality .. not so much the fit-n-finish. I've heard/read the same critique relative to the varying fit-n-finish. However, I've not personally experienced that issue w/ the quality of matls used .or.  actual assembly issues.

Not to say they don't exist .. just haven't seen it myself.

I know .. most will equate fit-n-finish w/ quality  .and.   rightly so. If attention wasn't paid to the fit-n-finish .. it was probably also lacking elsewhere in the production process.

I personally equate material used, assembly, & functionality more w/ quality than I do just the the fit-n-finish. But, that's just me.

    Stephen,

It is my understanding that all of the Daniels Family knives including the TVCC will survive.  That line is separate from the Queen purchase.  It has been a little slow lately because of the new baby and this project, but yes TVCC will survive.

With so many knives (insert bicycles, hats, fishing rods, cars, etc...) it seems that production suffers with each succeeding generation, or goes to pot when manufacturing is moved overseas. We are fortunate to be around at this point in the history of Queen Cutlery, and I expect that "Daniels Era" Queen and Tuna Valley knives will be treasured by our great grandchildren.
  • Alexander Noot

Well, I only own 1 Queen knife. But hearing all those stories I must've been lucky. Because apart from a (VERY) Dull edge mine was perfect when I got it.

It's even nicer now that I've gotten the bolsters engraved and put a laser edge on it. In fact it's probably my favourite knife (despite owning  "better" and more expensive knives.)

I still want a Queen Canoe slipjoint. But every place I've found them adds so much to the shipping costs that I could just never make myself pull the trigger.

Well, I'm glad about this news because, I'd like to get some Queen knives again.

  • Jan Carter

    Me too!

I have a few. The main problem I have come across is the sharpness of the blades. I have a Colonel Coon that only had one out of three blades sharp. All of my amber stag bones were sharp except for last years Sharpfans club knife. I expect that the quality will only go up with the Daniels family owning the company. I think this is great news.

We don't even have a Queen group, do we?

  • Jan Carter

We don't have the group yet Craig but I do have the Daniel's commitment that they will be starting one with us SOON.  I will be seeing Ken in a couple of weeks and will be sure to get things up and going :)

I expect there will be some quality changes as things move forward with the Daniel's family at the helm also Billy

I did hear some interesting news regarding this today.  I understand that Jennie Moore has been name President of Queen.  This month marks her 25th year with the company.   Jennie Moore is not new to the Cutlery Industry by any means but her name may not be familiar to you.  This accomplishment makes her only the second woman to hold that position in a knife company (if memory serves me correct).  To read a short interview done with her at the last Blade show......

Hey everyone its been crazy but the main thing we got the deal done at Queen. We really appreciate all the support, well wishes, and suggestions. We are digging in as I speak to turn things around and slowly you will see our goals add up. Please keep a look for the changes on the webpage and a NEW Queen group on IKC. Courtney Daniels will be completely taking over the TVCC line and has some in the works with one being out in the next few weeks.

To comment on the Queen quality issue we are going to be addressing the problems we already have been taking steps that can address some of the CONSISTENCY ISSUES that has been a growing problem at Queen over the years. But I think its that consistency in normal queen product not the contract work which some people sometimes don't take into consideration. Queen has made some SUPERIOR product over the years but the knives didn't have their name on it. The one that seems to have the most creditably and collectible is the Case Classics. I think we can all agree some of the Case Classics have become some of the most highly collectible knives out there and they all were made by Queen Cutlery Co. So I guess my point is Queen has amazing capabilities and has proven. What I think Queen needs is some proper management and marketing which we plan on doing. Thanks again everyone.

  • Jan Carter

Very well said!  Glad to know that TVCC will survive as its own entity, congrats to Ms Courtney.  I know she will do well.

Case Classics by Queen were my first loves in the knife world and I am excited about the consistency issue settling in and no longer being any kind of issue at all.

Thanks for spending some time and keeping us informed Ryan
