Thank you so much Mr. Turner ! I really appreciate it. What a great "collection" of people we have here at ikc.com ! I worked through several more batches of my collection last night and discovered several more pieces for which I have no box, and no item number. So I will be reaching out again to the great folks in this group for help with more item numbers. When I'm finished with all of the photos of the displays as well as the comprehensive catalog, I will be posting all of it right here for everybody to enjoy. Thanks again - Jon S.
I know where you are Jon I have a database that is a constant work in progress but it sure makes things easier to find and identify....it also helps if you are like me and a lot OCD!!!! lol I don't have much information but don't mind to dig for you in any way I can.
Question for you knife experts out there. I have a Case Christmas Tree toothpick with a sabre grind. I love the blade and handles, it was one of the first knives I got when I started collecting a couple years ago and it wasn't mint when I got it. I'm concerned because, from what I'm told, the celluloid scales can start deteriorating (I live in FL where it's humid) and gassing out, which will harm not only the Case knife but anything around it including the steel. If you look at where the handles meet the bolsters, you can see a bit of shrinkage, but also discoloration, especially on the far right photo. SO, what can I or should I do and should I be concerned? I printed out a form to send it back to Case, but I don't know what they'd do to it or what to expect or even to ask. Would they change out the handles for acrylic ones or corelon ones? This is just a bit out of my experience. Any advice would be great.
Case WILL replace Celluloid handles, for a cost. I can't remember how much they charge, it would also depend on the size of the knife. BUT, they will only use a current production Delrin for replacement. Several members over at the Case Collectors Club Forum have done that with Celluloid handles that started heading south.
Someone mentioned Case actually WON'T replace these because this was a 1992 limited edition of 500 not actually made by Case, but by Blue Grass Cutlery out of old time celluloid (genius, right?). Maybe they wanted the knives to be bio-degradable, who knows? I wish they WOULD replace them! A phone call may be in order.
I have a knife somewhere that shows extreme case of gassing. I ran across it a few weeks ago but cannot find it right now. I will look again tomorrow and post a pic if so. The shrinkage looks to start at the bolster ends which tend to look turned up but progresses to the top and bottom of scales. Knife also has shrunk in the center of scale around the shield. The image in hand looks as if the scales shrunk in the middle area of scales and raised on the edge areas. Can't remember what brand of knife right off, maybe quality of scale materials reacts different?
As expected, this was the reply from Case regarding my toothpick:
"Good morning,
Unfortunately the first is true. Many of the case classics with celluloid were produced with a very limited warranty. We are unable to repair the items as we do not have any of the tooling or material that could be comparable to the original. I am sorry that we could not help more.
It is too bad you can't get this great knife fixed. At lease Case was honest and admitted they sold a product which would be defective, limited warranty, and can not fix. One must keep these type of experiences in mind when buying collector folders.
Unfortunately, I bought this early on when I first started collecting and had NO idea. Case was a respected company and there was no reason to suspect they'd sell a defective product.
Garett Finney was recommended to fix this and he gave me a great quote to replace the handles with abalone and file work the blade. I'll probably do that, even though it'll ruin the collectibility as is.
A couple images of my latest Case purchase. This one dates from 1942. Case was one of three knife companies who made the Army Air Forces Folding Machete that was found in the B-2 and B-4 Emergency bail out kit for pilots and air crews.
The knife measures around 11.5 inches folded and about 15/5 inches when open. The blade is approximately 10 inches. This one is rock solid with a good patina. The blade is extremely tight and the liner lock functions perfectly. I haven't been this excited about a knife purchase in I don't know how long! The AAF folding machete was one of the knives on my bucket list.
i like this pattern as well. i am looking for an lightly packed mini copper head with warncliffe blade to do some modds to.if any one has one for sale please let me knowthanks kysteve10@yahoo.com
Also I am letting you all know first I picked up some awesome Case items available at the show for a giveaway starting tomorrow so watch the site for it!
The Case Cap Lifter is available in both traditional Yellow Delrin and Jigged Amber Bone. It’s 3.5″ closed and features a 2.75″ Clip Point blade and a cap lifter/screwdriver blade, both in Case Tru-sharp surgical steel.
Anyone ever seen older Case knives, 1970's and 1995 that the handle material appears to be stag but the Tang number starts with a 6? A 6318 and a 6333, both of which I would of sworn were 5's before I double checked them. Are these rehandled knives or did Case make knives like these, I can post pics if needed.
Suzanne,a few second cut stag handled Case pattern knives were marked with a 6 from the factory. In the 1980's , Jim Frost had delrin handle Case knives rehandled to stag. Private repairmen also rehandled Delrin knives with stag, brown Delrin was marked with a 6,yellow handled case knives were marked with a three and Minnie where we re-handled in stag. And 1990s second cut stag was marked with a SC, later in the 2000's the designation 6.5was used. Hope that helps.
For the past 7 years, I've been working on a collection of Smoky Mountain Knife Works President Pipes Case XX knives. I would really appreciate knowing more information about the series. When did this annual knife series begin? I'd love to see a list of knives associated with year produced. Best regards

Yeah, the celluloid near the bolsters is the first to go; that's what's warping out on mine now.
