Hello everybody. I have one simple question I need answered. I have come across a Benchmade blue class knife that is being offered on the net for a too good to be true price. Can someone help me identify the knife in question? I tried contacting the seller via email with my own questions and did not recieve an answer. It has no belt clip and I cannot see any visible number underneath the butterfly emblem.. Take a look at the picture and let me know.

    Hi Jacob,

That's a fake. Kind of looks like a cross between a 7 07 and a 705 but it's definitely not anything Benchmade made.

The blade grind is wrong, G-10 scales are rough, thumbstud is not right...probably the box is real but I'd like to see what the label on it says about the knife.

If the price is too good to be true it probably is...and good job on finding something that didn't look right and asking about it.

    Hope that helps.
  • Jakub Capek

    Thank you Joe,
that is what I thought. The scales did not look good and the whole configuration of the blade itself looked wrong. It is really a shame that there are so many copies of quality knife brands being sold to unsuspecting buyers, who may end up really unhappy with the brand name they bought and unknowingly tell others of the bad quality they encountered. I had asked about the box and other info, but the seller has not responded-I think he knows the fact that he is selling crap. I wonder how we can stop this from happening?
  • Joe Karp

    Hi Jakub,

Sorry I spelled your name wrong in the previous post.

What it boils down to is know your product. I spend a lot of time over on the Benchmade supported forum and there's a lot of information about copies/fakes and counterfeits there.

Benchmade is very aware of the problem and these look-alikes are flooding the marketplace, you'll see them on eBay and other places frequently.

That knife just looks cheap and the lines and grind are so out of balance to the casual person/buyer it would look like a great deal but it's not.

Benchmade, Emerson and many of the other manufacturers are working on the problem...and the worst part of this is the quality of these knives are improving with time. They're learning how to make better versions that are increasingly harder to tell are not the real thing.

Education is the key, and if it doesn't look right, it's probably not.

  • MICHAEL MAYFIELD

Hey Benchmade Buddies, for pre-Turkey day, I got my Benchmade Limited 710 number 125 of 250 very sweet.
    Stay Sharp
  • Joe Karp

    Which model Michael?

BTW - 'head's up'...Benchmade announced last week the HK Snody models, 14210 and 14205 are being discontinued for the 2011 season...so stock UP!

I have a new PE satin 14210 on the way in the mail as I write this.

    Cheers,
    Joe

Hey Fellow Addicts!!! I recently purchase the Dejavoo and during a discussion with a YouTube friend, he had compared this knife with the Spyderco Military and commented about a blade retention problem with the Dejavoo. I immediately tested both my Military and Dejavoo and found that with the Dejavoo held slightly downward and a few hard flicks of the wrist it did open. I don't feel it is a major issue, just wondering if anyone else had notice this.

  • Joe Karp

    Hi Michael,

I have both 745 and 740 Deja's, and yeah if you really flick your wrist hard the blade can be made to open. Of the two, the 740 is actually easier to flick due to the difference of more blade mass (that's a LOT of S30V blade...) So do I consider it an issue? Not really. I like the design of the Deja's over the Millie's (nice knives too...) and have never had either large or small Deja open or do anything out of the ordinary.

I will say that I prefer the Axis mechanism over the modified locking liner of the Deja's, hands down it's a stronger lock...but NO I don't consider this to be a major issue.
  • MICHAEL MAYFIELD

Hey Joe!!! I think I will start calling you the professor (if you don't mind), thanks for the feedback. However, while I got your attention, I just purchase the the Subrosa, it's a beautiful knife, what's your feeling about this knife?
    Mike
  • Joe Karp

Thanks for the compliment...just a lifetime of carrying knives, and collecting Benchmades since '95. I've owned most of the knives in the catalog at one time or another, it's a rewarding hobby.

On the 790, it's a really fun knife. I don't have one but a friend's got a shop where I can check these things out at my leisure.

The one I played with was very smooth. The blade's elegant and simple, I'm not a big fan of swoops and swedges. The mild recurve is no problem, a system like the Edge Pro will handle sharpening chores easily. The Nitrous mechanism is well thought out, and despite BM's use of that danged pointy stud first used on the 670/672 Optimizer models, the blade opens easily with only a minor nudge. And I'll take an S30V blade any time. For fans of Ti scales these slabs are good ones, and yes, they will mark up like all the others with EDC carry time. Oh yeah, the clip on the knife is a nice change from the stock clips normally assigned to the other models. It's worth the money spent IMO.

Hope that helps...Let us know what you think after you play with it for a while!

    Cheers,
    Joe
  • MICHAEL MAYFIELD

Hey Professor Joe!!! I'm awaiting the mail delivery as we speak for my 790, and will let you know how much fun it is. Frankly all aspects of the Benchmade folders meet or exceed that of some of the more expensive popular brands. I took your advice regarding the 14205 & 14210 and ordered 14205 all black, Knifeworks had them in stock for $120 thanks for the tip.
    Mike
  • Jeff Henry

I did the same as Michael and ordered a 14205 as soon as I heard from Joe that they were discontinued. I never even gave the H&K series knives a second look until now. The Harley Davidson knifes catch my attention every now and then but I won't buy one because of the Harley logo on them. But the 14205 I had to have because it's a Snody design. That blade design is perfection and art.
  • Joe Karp

    Sounds good Jeff,

I have two 14205 and two 14210's and think they're among the best Benchmades ever made.

On the new 14210 I just received it's even nicer than the original, the G-10 scales are grippier and have more of a matt finish.

All I can hope is whatever Benchmade plans to replace these with had better be as good as these two models are right now.

2011 is going to be an interesting year with the purchase of Lone Wolf under BM's belt...the LW Defender is a great knife, it's going to be interesting to see what they announce after the Shot Show early into next year.
  • Gary Kennedy

Old news Benchmade bought Lone Wolf Oct-9-2010. Now a Paul Benchmade what do you think .
  • Ronald Franklin

Hello, I just traded for a Benchmade Ares 733-02 Limited Edition # 384 of 500, Winewood handle,  New in the Aluminum Box still with the cardboard sleeve still around it, and was wondering if I got beat or not....what's these things worth.

    Thanks

  • Joe Karp

Nice knife in the original packaging. Rough value: $225 or so...that Ares is hard to find. The estimate of value is just IMO.
  • Kevin Williams

Hi guys! I love this group! I'm a newbie to this forum (not to knife collecting) and I really like Benchmade knives. Joe, I see earlier in this discussion, you mentioned the 14205...I picked one up (new) and love it. When I first got it, the action was a bit sticky so I used a few drops of CLP and worked it in while watching TV. Within a day or two it was as smooth as silk. Now, it has become one of my favorite BMs. I can't keep my hands off of it. (The name of this group is appropriate - Benchmade Addicts). I do have a question please? Does anyone know if there is a way to determine when BM is going to stop production of a model? I am tempted to pick up another 14205, just to have a spare. Thanks all, I enjoy the posts and look forward to getting to know you folks a little better.
  • Kevin Williams

After seeing the post by Joe about the 14205 I had to go get another one before they got scarce and more expensive. While I was at it, just to make it worth the shipping, I added a couple others I've been considering for awhile. Nothing left to do now but  bask in the afterglow of another Benchmade shipment coming to me....yes!!! I will be getting a BM14205BK H&K Snody, BM740BK Dejavoo and and a BM550BK Sand handle scales....I already feel comfortable here....whoever named this group sure nailed it...Benchmade addiction....I feel like I found a 12 step program... :-)
  • Joe Karp

Nice choices of knives Kevin, esp. nice combo is that sand handled 550BK Grip. And yes, welcome to the addiction...once bitten (or chosen) I don't think there is a cure...(;-)
  • Kevin Williams

Does anyone know what a LNIB Skirmish BM630 might be worth? I know that's a subjective question and I'm only looking for a guesstimate. Any thoughts?
  • Joe Karp

NIB 630 will go for $200 and on up, depending on what you want for it and what the buyer's willing to spend. Given they're discontinued, both 635 and 630 models are drawing higher prices as they disappear into safes and sock drawers.
  • Kevin Williams

Thanks Joe! Would $250 for a used/LNIB be considered too much to pay, or put another way, would it be reasonable to think if I waited, I could find either a NIB or LNIB for less? I'm in no rush!
  • Joe Karp

Nope, not too much. Shop around the various sites (including the Benchmade Forums) and on eBay, they're out there.

One more thing...with Ti handles that show scuffs just by breathing on them I've begun to seek out light users already broken in. Even then these things hold onto their value.

    Hi everyone,

  • Stan T

So I am looking at a Benchmade Bedlam, all black and auto. What are the groups thoughts on that one? Seems like a great knife.
  • MICHAEL MAYFIELD

Hey Stan!!  I also have the Bedlam Auto, the fit and finish are great if you like automatic knives. Frankly, I prefer the Onslaught  which I have and it's Mini version, both are manual Axis lock with a similar fit and finish.
