I have a question about a Case xx, 1983 lightning s trapper pattern 3254 that has a white bone slab on the shield side and a yellow delrin slab on the obverse side. Looks like stainless see no cv mark on it. Any and all info is appreciated. It has not been sharpened or used but a a small crack at the center pin on the bone side, bolsters are a little discolored from storage and handling along with a couple of slight rust spots (spit marks) on blades. Just wondering how many were made and what price point then and now.

This was item #75 at the Bruce Voyles Auction last night in Sieverville.  There are 6 drawers in the back, 2 of which where unlocked. The drawers rattled something around in them but we couldnt unlock them!  I have an email into the buyer.  I would LOVE to know whats hidden in those 4 drawers.  If I get an answer I will share it with you

    Nice one Jeremy!

  • Jan Carter

    Jeremy,

I hope this is not the last one they do also.  I dont think it was the best pattern for selling as many as they wanted.  Want to sell a bunch?  Sell teardrops LOL

All in All, this is one very good looking toothpick!

I would agree Jan. I am not sure how it got so many votes. It is the forum members who vote on the pattern. Maybe they were thinking it would be cheaper (it actually was the lowest price forum knife I have gotten from Case). I guess we will see what next year brings in the fall. I do like the looks of this one.

GREAT looking Toothpick Jeremy! I like the Toothpick.

  • jim buda

REALLY YOU GUYS REALLY DON'T KNOW HOW MANY COLLECT "TEXAS" TOOTHPICKS AMAZING ONE OF THE FIRST PATTERNS THIS IS HOW I WRITE SO TAKE NO OFFENSE

  • Tobias Gibson

I think Jim is correct.  I'm pretty sure the three inch toothpicks is the top selling small pattern, if not it is right behind the Peanut. The teardrop runs hot and cold but some patterns such as the small toothpick is timeless.

  • Jan Carter

    Jim and Tobias,

    No offense taken Jim.

Although I know a number of pattern collectors that do collect toothpicks, they are one of those patterns that are collector specific.

No offense meant, in my eyes some of the pattern specific collections are awesome.  I happen to think the sowbelly is one very unique and lovely pattern but it tends to only sell to those specific collectors unless you happen to match it with a handle material that people just cannot resist.

I catch myself spending way too much money on the SMKW eBay page MVP Knife. They are very good to the buyers and I trust them completely. Sometimes I can find some real good bargains.

One of my favorite Case knives.

This is general known as the V-44 Survival Knife that was originally developed in 1934 for and issued to flying personnel to carry in a jungle bail-out kit attached to the seat pack and later to the parachute harness. The original knives were manufactured through 1942. It is also sometimes more correctly referred to as the Model 18. It was most famously utilized by US jungle fighters in the Pacific theater of operations; most notably by the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion. Several companied made this knife. This example is manufactured by Case and carries the CASE XX logo. It has the rarer and highly sought-after brass cross guard. The handle is of the black molded variety. The knife is large, heavy and has a very intimidating look and feel; a factor that helped to make it popular with the troops who were fortunate enough to carry one. It shows slight sharpening and is in VG+ condition. The sheath is brown leather, stitched in the rear with a small tear at the throat where the owner made a rawhide keeper for it. It has the following hand-written inscription inked on the rear of the sheath: "USMC 4 Bgt 2By/ Canal, Bouganville” with a hand drawn Raider insignia. It is readable, however too light to photo well. For references please see Coles III Pages 136-137 and Silvey Page 77.

Hello Friends - I have a 2004 Case 6355-WH-SS Seahorse Whittler with bright red jigged bone handles, and the "Long-Tail C" Silverscript inlaid "Case" logo in the handle.  It is blade etched "First Run" and accordingly, has no box. I'm trying (so far in vain) to locate the ITEM NUMBER which Case used for this piece (with the RED jigged bone handles) when it went into production in 2004. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.  I am trying to "catalog" my entire Case collection, including "year-appropriate / handle material correct" Item numbers. Thanks in advance for any help with this. Best - JS

  • James Turner

Here you go Jon Salmon hope this helps your record keeping # 95916

  • Jon Salmon

Thank you so much Mr. Turner ! I really appreciate it. What a great "collection" of people we have here at ikc.com ! I worked through several more batches of my collection last night and discovered several more pieces for which I have no box, and no item number. So I will be reaching out again to the great folks in this group for help with more item numbers. When I'm finished with all of the photos of the displays as well as the comprehensive catalog, I will be posting all of it right here for everybody to enjoy. Thanks again - Jon S.

  • James Turner

I know where you are Jon I have a database that is a constant work in progress but it sure makes things easier to find and identify....it also helps if you are like me and a lot OCD!!!! lol I don't have much information but don't mind to dig for you in any way I can.

THE KNIFE IN THE PHOTO IS SILVER SCRIPT AND PART OF A SET. WE HAVE THE SET. BUT AN EARLIER EDITION

  • Richard Schuchman

Question for you knife experts out there. I have a Case Christmas Tree toothpick with a sabre grind. I love the blade and handles, it was one of the first knives I got when I started collecting a couple years ago and it wasn't mint when I got it. I'm concerned because, from what I'm told, the celluloid scales can start deteriorating (I live in FL where it's humid) and gassing out, which will harm not only the Case knife but anything around it including the steel. If you look at where the handles meet the bolsters, you can see a bit of shrinkage, but also discoloration, especially on the far right photo. SO, what can I or should I do and should I be concerned? I printed out a form to send it back to Case, but I don't know what they'd do to it or what to expect or even to ask. Would they change out the handles for acrylic ones or corelon ones? This is just a bit out of my experience. Any advice would be great.

    Craig Henry

Case WILL replace Celluloid handles, for a cost. I can't remember how much they charge, it would also depend on the size of the knife. BUT, they will only use a current production Delrin for replacement. Several members over at the Case Collectors Club Forum have done that with Celluloid handles that started heading south.

  • Richard Schuchman

There's another thorough discussion on this going on here:http://iknifecollector.com/forum/topics/case-celluliod

Someone mentioned Case actually WON'T replace these because this was a 1992 limited edition of 500 not actually made by Case, but by Blue Grass Cutlery out of old time celluloid (genius, right?). Maybe they wanted the knives to be bio-degradable, who knows? I wish they WOULD replace them! A phone call may be in order.

That's a shame. There is a person on the CCC forum that does re-handling on Case knives.

  • Richard Schuchman

Just fyi, I contacted the Case warranty and repair dept. yesterday. We'll see what they say.

  • Bob Robinson

I have a knife somewhere that shows extreme case of gassing. I ran across it a few weeks ago but cannot find it right now. I will look again tomorrow and post a pic if so. The shrinkage looks to start at the bolster ends which tend to look turned up but progresses to the top and bottom of scales. Knife also has shrunk in the center of scale around the shield. The image in hand looks as if the scales shrunk in the middle area of scales and raised on the edge areas. Can't remember what brand of knife right off, maybe quality of scale materials reacts different?

  • Richard Schuchman

Yeah, the celluloid near the bolsters is the first to go; that's what's warping out on mine now.
