Thanks, mate! They are all so purdy! Do you have a personal favorite? And of course I have to ask; are they all users?
In lieu of a lanyard tube/hole I am really attracted to knives with a bail on them. Like your Conductors, for instance. However, I have had a couple of instances where the bail got in the path of my blade snapping closed and the ensuing chips to those edges were enough to bring tears to my eyes. Granted, I wasn't paying attention on those occasions when it did happen. But it was enough to leave me shell shocked and fearful to own any more knives that have bails that could possibly end up being guillotined at the expense of a nice edge.
Allowing for the fact that I am probably just a dork (that's no doubt a given), have you or anyone else had that happen? Accidentally let the blade snap right on top of a bail and ruin an edge?
And thanks again, Craig, for posting this excellent pic of all those GEC's! Totally awesome, my friend!
I did snap my blade on the bail one time but it didn't harm the blade or the bail. It was my Imperial Boy Scout knife with the bone handles. I was 9 years old at the time. Even though the blade and bail were not harmed it made an impression on me so I tied a leather thong on the bail which hung down about four inches. This was the reminder I needed to keep the dang bail our of the way.
I did it twice on a Wenger alox Standard Issue Soldier knife. The second time was the charm -- It looked like a shark took a bite out of the edge! I had to completely re-shape and re-profile the blade using my diamond Sharpmaker rods. I had to remove a whole lot of steel before that mistake was corrected. That's not the only thing that got removed, though -- I also removed the bail from that knife! I wasn't about to chance ruining that edge again.
I like your idea of hanging a lanyard from the bail to serve as a reminder. I may have to do that if I ever get myself another knife with a bail. Thanks for that tip, Clint!
J.J.............I wouldn't hesitate to purchase from JSR, fast shipping and quick correspondence ...as a matter of fact I wouldn't hesitate to purchase from any of the distributors on the Great Eastern website...since I have.
JJ, I bought my Snakewood White Owl from them! No problems. In fact I emailed them asking if they were going to get the new Little Jacks, and they were real nice and asked if I wanted them to get anything they weren't showing on their site. So I say go for it!
Thanks Jan....but I don't know if that's good or bad! LOL! Sometimes I talk to myself and I don't like what I say!
Ron, that Hay'n Helper with sheepfoot and pen looks really useful! I might get one of those instead of a Bullnose. Or in addition to a Bullnose.......or something. I need to go talk to myself..........
I know what you mean Clint. I like the orange, and the whitish (glow in the dark) handles, but for that all business-go work on the farm look, black is hard to beat. Or bone. LOL!
Okay GEC. How about a Peanut pattern?? There's whole threads on other forums just for Peanut pattern knives...."The Cult of Peanut" for one. Some people collect ONLY Peanut pattern knives! I used to have a Peanut collection a long time ago...all brands. I think just about every knife company made, or make one. So how about it?
Hurricane Sandy Auction Starts Today ~ October 30, 2012!
100% of the proceeds from this auction will be donated to the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army, at the winners direction.
It's no secret that the East Coast got hit hard by Hurricane Sandy and the clean up is gonna take a long time. In a effort to help out, TSA Knives is donating one of the 2011 5th Annivesary #46 Whalers made by Great Eastern Cutlery AND a matching sheath donated by Dave at Knife Leather Traditions for auction. The Whaler is finished with Ebony Wood handles.
with your bid. Bids will be taken until Noon CST, Monday, November 5, 2012. Like always, don't wait until the last minute to place your bid. Unlike Ebay, bids don't necessarily show up immediately and you don't want to miss out!!!
Remember, 100% of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to either the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army. Thanks and good luck!!!
I think a GEC Peanut pattern would go like gangbusters! I know I'd probably buy most of the variations they put out! Plus ones for users. Lots of Peanut nuts out there!
Yeppers! It would indeed be a rather handsome looking Geppetto Whittler...
GEC hit this one out of the park! The knife is absolute purrfection! The pull on all of the blades is about a 5 or 6 -- very smooth and easy. No nail breakers here. Half stops on the pen and coping blades. No half stop on the master Wharncliffe. The pioneer jigged bone is gorgeous! Everything about this little Geppetto screams quality! I couldn't be happier.
A very grateful thanks to our own Miss Jan, also to Mr. Steve/aka/Hog, as well as GEC's angel of this undertaking, Miss Christine Tucker! Thank you, guys, for making this knife a reality!
Oh, and in case anyone was wondering what was in that other tube...
Wonder no more! It was this beautiful Red Buffalo Horn Barlow that was produced in 2008. It makes a great addition to my growing GEC family and especially my new Geppetto Whittler!
I give thanks to the magic of the Buddha Barlow whose picture I posted only hours ago in anticipation of the new Club knife. It works like a charm every time!
Hopefully yours won't be too far behind. Both of the knives that came in the mail today far exceeded my expectations. Our new Club knife is a real winner! As is this new '08 Barlow I won in an Ebay auction last week.
In my opinion this years iKC Community knife, the Geppetto Whittler, is much nicer than last years knife. Don't get me wrong, last years knife was really a nice knife. It's just that this whittler is on a whole other level of quality. Perhaps that's because it's a Northfield and last years knife was a Tidioute?
In any event, GEC has really raised the bar with their latest efforts and I couldn't be happier with all of their knives that I have received in this last month. That would also include the Whancliffe Trapper in the pic below that was produced by GEC for another knife forum just last month. Keep up the great work GEC!
