Knives of the Great Outdoors

A group dedicated to knives and equipment used by Scouts, Hikers, Fishers, Sailors and all the other outdoor adventurers.  A place to show off everything from  the knife in your bug-out bag to your tackle box. Or the knife you take on a day hike or climbing the Matterhorn.

I just acquired a Kissing Crane Scout from the 1930's. It's built real solid. I'll try get some photos up later.

  • Tobias Gibson

We cracked the big 50!  We're at 51 members and growing.  Thanks to everyone who has joined.   This site isn't just for Boy Scout Camp knives.  If you use a knife in the Great Outdoors or if you collect knives to be used in the Great Outdoors, we want to see it!

For example, nothing quite says the Great Outdoors as a Woodman's Pal.  If the Tin man would've had this puppy instead of his axe, he wouldn't have rusted solid in mid-swing and the Wicked Witch would've thought twice about messing with him and his friends.

And my twist on my Woodman's Pal.  New sheath with a pocket and sheath for an upswept skinner.   One of these days, I'll straighten that patch!

(The original sheath is still mint. And yeah, the blade has quite a few more scuff than what you see in the pic.)

  • Jan Carter

Robert, looking forward to seeing that Crane!

Yes, Miss Jan, I am behind in my photos....

  • Clay Strong

Tobias, I want to buy a Woodman's Pal someday. They are cool and I'm sure very effective. I picked up its cousin to slip into the sheath on the back of my over-the-shoulder shotgun holster. I'm not paranoid in the woods, just scared as hell of mad grizzlies. LOL  Vietnam era, Ontario Knife, Bushwacker Limb Trim.

THE WOODSMAN PAL is not only one of the best blades...but its one o the best for the $$...

im shocked i dont own one but mant times i have borrowed a friends... its on the llisy odf 'KNIFE WANTTS" ..like others...LOL.

NICE PAL BRO! also i know that these ones are PA made!!...where are they made a??t,,,i am not in the mood to hit BING!,,,,LOL!

  • peter force

@ tobias i sent out about 30 invites out... last night... so will see if any pop up!

  • Tobias Gibson

Peter. The picture with the Tag and clean blade is the way it looked when it first arrived about a year ago.   The sheath is still unused but the Pal, not so much.  I've used it to take out a bush or two (or three or ten)  -- split fire wood with it, hacked roots out of the ground, etc.

I bought it for the bug out bag with the understanding my life and my families life might depend on it some day.  With that in mind it would be fool hardy not to put it through its paces.  Plus, what the fun in having a big honkin' bushwhacker and just hanging it on the wall!

  • Tobias Gibson

That is one awesome weed whacker you got there, Clay!   I can really dig it.  The Woodman's pal is great for heavy branches and bramble but really too heavy for cutting  a path through saw grass.  I still need to get a decent machete.

  • Howard P Reynolds

    Peter,

Woodman's Pal, I thought was made in Boyertown, PA (268 N. Berks St.), but Google Maps says they are in Pottstown, PA - Pro Tool Industries (337 Circle of Progress Dr).

For all the bird hunters out there!

  • Howard P Reynolds

Hey Tim, that's a nice looking tool.  That pruner part must be for cutting through the turkey skin in order to skin the bird instead of plucking the feathers.

  • Tobias Gibson

Again with the Bird Hunters.  Like those fancy clippers couldn't be used on a wascally wabbit!

  • Howard P Reynolds

Bugs says it's duck season, no matter what season it is, Tobias.

  • Tobias Gibson

Howard, Sometimes it isn't Rabbit or Duck Season!

I bought a wok for my wife.  But then she got mad at me because I tried to thow it at a wabbit.

  • Tobias Gibson

Hi all.  I made a slight edit to the group.  The name is now just Knives of the Great Outdoors.  I think the description took care of the sub-title. (Scouts, Camps, Hobos, Fishers, and Sailors.)  The focus hasn't changed.  If it is a knife for use in outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, sailing, whatever, go for it. Heck,  If there is such a thing as "Croquet Knife" go for it!  I'd love to see it!

  • Ken Spielvogel

    Did someone say wabbit?

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

Lucky he's in this group, he might get shot in the Outdoor or Gun Groups...lol  Nice bunny.

  • Tobias Gibson

That rabbit will make a fine fricassee as son as I get my Josh Hill designed Blow-Gun/Sling-Shot  2 in 1 combo!

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

I have a cousin that has a Blow Gun. It's really something.

    Robert Burris

I shot a ton of rocks in a sling shot, when I was a boy. I got pretty good with it, to.

  • Howard P Reynolds

Thanks, Clay.  I didn't know Amazon was pushing for taxes on online purchases.

  • Howard P Reynolds

Do you mean to tell me that iKC members are not a bunch of over-the-hill, grey-haired guys/gals, just a-sittin on the porch, in bib overalls, makin small sticks outa big sticks?!  I declare!

It seems that some here are not willing to go quietly into obscurity.  Glad to hear it!

Thanks, Clay.  I bookmarked your blog page, and commend you on your "fight" with e-Bay.

  • Howard P Reynolds

Just a thought, Clay, et al. Ya might want to start a new thread on this.  I hear that admins. everware is mean as snakes, and "highjacking" is outlawed.

  • Tobias Gibson

I'm not one to try and silence any voice but seriously this page is for people who want to talk about knives used in the Great Outdoors and while drifting in the stream is permissible eventually threads should move elsewhere.  IKC does have places for this conversation and I would prefer it to move to such a spot.  Heck, I might even give my two cents on the topic in the appropriate venue but this is not the appropriate venue.   This spot is for discussing knives used in the great outdoors.  Thanks for your cooperation.

Now lets get back to Knives and the Great Outdoors!

  • Clay Strong

Sorry to offend. Tobias. Just wanted folks to know that eBay is not supportive of sellers who misrepresent a product. Consider me reprimanded and outta here.

  • Ken Spielvogel

Tobias, what do you think of my new USMC Fighting Knife - smaller version in the fixed blade site? I guess they made larger ones and smaller ones. I had never seen a cut down one before, but I really like it.

  • Tobias Gibson

Clay, it would take a lot more than you giving your opinion about Amazon to offend me.  Furthermore, discussion often meander and without intent.  As this is the comment wall, it would be hard to hi-jack it as there is no real thread but a variety of topics going on at once.

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

Hay Clay, please don't you be offended, Tobias is just trying to keep things flowing in one direction. Heck that's hard to do, sometimes.

Once a person said, "there's just so much you can say about knives", how wrong can he be. There's an endless conversation of topics, that we can discuss. So please just keep rolling with our discussions.

  • Tobias Gibson

Truly the Case, Robert and Clay.  If I offended, my apologies. Many times I try to decide where best to post my conversations.  I've often started a post in one place only to move to some place I felt was more appropriate.    I can see how the use of the phrase "But seriously" could be taken wrong.  My apologies to Caly and anyone else who took me wrong.

  • John McDowell

i think the remington bush pilot is one of the best outdoor knives ever made, they got it right.

  • Ken Spielvogel

John, I have a Bush Pilot, they are a very nice knife.

  • Tobias Gibson

The Bush Pilot?  Is that the Cigar Moose?

  • In Memoriam

    Robert Burris

I 'm not sure either but a Moose pattern is a great outdoorsman knife.

  • James Cole

Well thank you very much Mr. Hanner.  I went and looked at that listing and before I knew it I lost control of my hand and the next thing I knew I owned the darn thing.

  • Tobias Gibson

Congratulations on the buy James but I got a tell ya.  Those boy scouts that appear on the bottom of the cardboard look kind of creepy!

    Or maybe I'm just jealous!

  • Ken Spielvogel

Looks more like a Girl Scout - LOL

  • James Cole

Tobias, Ken,  Yah, he does look a little effeminate.  Well maybe a little more than a little.  Specially with those cute little pixie shoes.

Steve my friend, yes you are, thank you.

Hey everyone.  I just discovered a knife maker practically next door to me.  He is in Rogersville AL as we say here in the South, just down the road a piece (about 20 miles.)  I have already picked out my Christmas present.  I am going to have him make me a knife using antler from one of my deer kills for the handles.

I encourage everyone to check out his website.  I met him today at the Old Time Fiddlers Convention held every year here in Athens.  He had a booth there. Musicians come from all over the US to compete in the various competitions.  The main event of the competition is the crowning of the fiddle champion.

  • Jan Carter

I LOVE this!  if you hunt, you should have a hunting knife made from your own antlers!

  • John McDowell

aways means more when your apart of the process.

  • Howard P Reynolds

Congratulations on the find, Charles.  I have often thought that Pennsylvania had the fewest Case dealers per capita than any state, except maybe Delaware.  And, there are fewer old-time hardware stores.  Plus, the chain hardware stores here sell a lot of China knives.  This seems odd because we have W.R. Case, Queen and GEC making knives all day long here in PA.  I too stumbled on a new knife manufacturer in PA last Spring (Survive Knives [CPM-3V steel] fixed blades) out in Gettysburg, PA, so I ordered a couple.

  • Jan Carter

Hey Howard, thanks for telling us about that company.  I didn't realize that PA had become home to another knife compnay.  The product looks good....what do you think about it?

    https://www.surviveknives.com/news/1747

  • Howard P Reynolds

    Jan,

I am new to CPM-3V and my pre-orders of the GSO-7/7, and GSO-10 have not been filled yet.  The latest update from Survive Knives says that the GSO-7/7s should ship next week, and the GSO-10s should be shipped by the end of November.  I ordered the bow drill divot on the GSO-7/7 and am anxious to try it out.  I have seen videos about making a home-made bow drill divot (take a stainless steel [or aluminum] measuring teaspoon, cut off the handle, round off the cut, and drill the appropriate sized hole in the knife handle.  Put a cushion of JB Weld in the hole and press the bowl of the teaspoon into position.) so if this "custom made" bow drill divot works well, I might have to do the home-made alteration in other of my knives.  Don't suppose it would work for the GSO-10 since the blade is too long to balance at the handle, and it wasn't an option.
