The cicada IS alive (or at least was when I took the photo), & was very tolerant of me taking this photo, knife & all... But there it was, sitting on a sandbag, what was I supposed to do -- NOT take a photo of the cicada with my EDC pocket knife?!?
With you being up in Minnesota, I am thinking that the cicada in your photo is the Neotibicen canicularis. I have not had the opportunity to see one of those before.I have only seen a few types in person. Neotibicen linnei (Linne's Cicada), Okanagana rimosa (Say's Cicada), and Neotibicen tibicen (Morning Cicada) are the ones I have seen personally.
