That's a neat fire-lay. From my home in Houston, I have to drive almost 200 miles before I can see a rock on the ground as big as those. We're jungle cats here.
To answer your question, the "friends" thing is a "proof of contact" that shows that an old hand welcomes a new guy and invites him to take a look at my interests. Just a welcoming ceremony. It's being friendly (that's what Tejas - Texas - means in the old native dialect. Not tradin' spit!
I am happy to have many friends. In order to have friends in this world, first we have to be a friend.
