Happy birthday to our dear friend

Johnny, Happy birthday! Just wanted to say you really have my interest peaked around your trip to the Ithaca gun company. I just looked at a special commemorative Ithaca 45 ACP. In also really like a lot of their shotguns. Hope you will share soon.
    Have a great one.

Johnny, Your knife photos are fab-tastic and I'm a professional I know it when I see it. You're a freind of GEC's, why don't they hire you to take their photographs? You would do so much better than what they post in their line up. Talk to them, convince them, your photography work is more than good, it's passionate.

  • Scott Rauber

Hey bro, thanks for the comopliments on my knife reviews!! I did join GEC and as I write this I am formulating my review for the 721112 jigged brazilian cheery wood model.  Ooompah!! Steel sahlute brother!

  • KENT GABLE

Thanks Johnny- I'll do that.  We both seem to appreciate fine, basic cutlery although I was surprised that you don't seem to like stockmans? I've carried a '98 Buck Stockman 301 for so many years, I can't remember? I always liked having the versatility of 3 different blade designs. It's always been a mainstay tool for me. I'll send you a photo of my current one along with my earliest which goes back to the '70's. Even bought a 2002 for my 44 year old son because I find it so practical a tool.

I've owned a Case Stockman and although I like Case products very much, it just didn't hold up to the rigors of sailing life when I spent a couple years sailing from Florida, down through the islands to Venezuela & back. I went back to my trusty old Buck.

  • KENT GABLE

Yes Johnny, I agree. The 301 is a working man's tool and that is why I have always depended on their durability. It certainly isn't as pretty a collectors item, to me. Frankly, I liked my original 301 better. Oh the abuse I've given both but I liked the slimmer blades and case of the 1st one and it still held up just as well. I know not why? They are completely different blades upon close inspection.

I've always admitted that Case XX & others make a prettier knife but Buck is built like a Mack truck. Even though I really love my Randall Model 5 with that gorgeous stag handle, I still think my knife of choice might be my '02 Buck Special 119. That was the model Al Buck (Founder) made so many of and distributed to our troops during WWII. It would be a toss up if I had to choose.

Also, that looks like Appalachian hill country. Is it? I love that region. Climbed Clingman's Dome in East Tenn. with my son and cousin back in '79. By the way, you have a beautiful collection of GEC-s and others there.

  • KENT GABLE

Johnny if your refering to the small folding lockback in stag, that would be a Buck Prince 503. Substanstially higher in price due to the stag handles I presume? I bought it from ePrague through eBay and really like it for it's trim blade size  (only 2 1/2") and it light weight.

I've never heard that those early Buck knives were ever produced by Schrade? Maybe that's why the significant difference in those two models? Frankly, if the early "Buck" Stockman were made by another mfg., I liked the early one better.

The stag Canal Street Swell Center Jack (next to my Northfield) with the Dr.'s butt is an absoulutely beautiful knife (an A.G. Russell exclusive, ltd. to 200 pieces) but it IS also quite thick and heavy for my tastes. This is probably why I favor my first Buck Stockman?

By the way, I'm giving consideration to retiring my '98 Stockman for my Northfield in Plum. Only troubly is I'm not afraid to add some more scratches to my old Buck as where I hate to mar up my Northfield with inevitable scratches and sharpening marks. Sort of like getting that first ding in a new car? Decisions-decisions? I've contacted Gary Norton of Northwest Knives to see what else GEC-Northfield has come out with? They have some nice stag handles but I'm tiring of stag and would like seeing something in colored handles.

  • Trand

Thanks Johnny. Btw, what is the best/preferred way to post pics? Should I upload them here or is linking to my photobucket account ok?
  • Trand

You added the pics by using the normal [IMG] tags right? It does look like doing that makes an external link. I was just able to link directly to my pics on photobucket by using the image button when adding a comment and then using the direct link instead of one with tags.

  • Jan Carter

Trand, either way you add them is perfect.   If you choose from my computer, it will show the pic here, if you go with URL, you can use the link.  We appreciate your sharing with us

Johnny, I think you might be mad at old Pawpaw about the disagreement I had with your good friend and knife dealer the other day. I want you to know, I had no intentions of saying something bad about knife dealers or him personally. I was trying to warn about bad dealers in general and that we must not trust everyone until we get to know them. I am old and very disable, I also speak in broken cajun english, that you have to understand I have trouble wording my conversations on here. Sometimes one word, one way or the other, makes my meaning all wrong. Well please, lets not let ole Pawpaws mistake ruin our friendship...Good Buddy.

  • Bob Andrews

Thanks Caleb! Much Appreciated! And a Happy and Safe Independence Day to you and your family!
