Our canals are very narrow in general Jan ,we do have some that are called wide but none are anything like the ones in continental Europe. It is the size of the locks in general that make the difference. On a lot of the system you are limited to a boat 6 feet 10 inches in width. The canals here were designed to have horse drawn craft , the path at the side is still called the towpath. Our canals were never widened when engines came along as I guess they must have been in France and Holland. Hopefully a  video of horsedrawn narrow boat on this link.....

I know you said they are narrow but how wide are the Canals?  they dont look very wide either
