This is a "QR" or Quick Recognition code block. They are used extensively in Asia, where the image can be snapped with a cell phone, and the data decoded and entered into the address book. Two phones can simultaneously exchange information in a "QR-69 style move". The QR code block has heavy error correction built in for a flawless recognition even if many little blocks are added or missing. You will notice a similar technology on postal envelopes and premium delivery service labels.
