Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

I'm deciding whether or no to carry my Randall Model 8 Trout and Bird knife.  I've had it for a number of years but haven't used it yet.  Randall is selling it new for $350 which means its resale value is probably under $200, my "carry break point".

The sheath has an olive cord thong attached to it -- the sheath, not the knife.  What is it there for?  It's not a leg tie down, so what is it?

Thanks for your help.

Howdy, Jim!

Nice looking Randall you've got there! I'll bet you've never even put that knife in the sheath yet, have you? Once you do you'll appreciate that the paracord you're asking about is used to secure the top portion of the knife's handle to the sheath.

I have never owned this particular knife, or any Randall for that matter. But I did carry a Puma White Hunter for many years and it incorporated a similar securing mechanism in the form of a leather loop in the upper portion of the sheath. Once the knife was placed into the sheath then that leather loop was threaded through the lanyard hole in the knife's handle and then looped up and over the the end of the handle. It is there to keep the knife close to your body and reduce the chance of the handle snagging on something.

Put your knife into the sheath (I know I know - Yikes! - Scratches) and then loop the paracord over the handle and then pull that knot to cinch it up.

Welcome to our forum, Jim! I hope that answers your question?

A model 8 sells for a lot more than $200 in that condition. Welcome sir.

Thanks for the information guys.  If the same model 8 sells for $350 at Randall now, do you have an idea what this one is worth?  I have several older knives by Dozier, Centofante, Morseth, etc. that I'm thinking of selling but I'm least attached to the Randall.  In your  opinion should I carry and use it?

The decision to carry and use your Randall knife rests entirely upon your shoulders. Only you know how much you value it and what you intend to do with it.

Personally. I probably wouldn't carry it. In fact, I wouldn't even put it in the sheath.

I won't put a price on it. But I suspect that it's worth at least twice what you think it's worth?

HEY LOVE THE KNIFE!!

the only thing i can think the thong is for..and if this was already said i apologize.

but most of the time thongs like that are added in WORRY. .. WORRY that the KEEPER STRAP's button will pop when in use. OUT GOES YOUR KNIFE FROM THE SHEATH...you dont realize till you go to yank it out.  its basicallt a back up to the keeper strap that most folks add on their own as most knives do not come with them.

oh in my opinion carry and use what you want and what is called for...thats me!  ...if you are looking to sell your knives then the choice is easy. do not carry.  good to meet ya fela knifer!
