Montgomery Ward originally described Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, who first appeared in a 1939 book written by one of the company's advertising copywriters and given free to children as a way to drive traffic to the stores

Written by Montgomery Ward copywriter Bob May- It was adapted to a song by his brother-in-law,Johnny Marks, and the song made famous by singing cowboy, Gene Autry. It became the #2 best selling Christmas song of all time behind "White Christmas". The department store was Montgomery Wards.
