I have had my original Kershaw leek since the whole ken onion line came out. Its such a great EDC knife and has withstood alot of what I have put it through. However, I had a couple problems with it.

My first problem was that stupid lock on the back. It always engaged when I least expected it and bothered me nonstop. Eventually I just took it off. The next problem was the blade length. I usually prefer big, heavy knives but the slimmness of the leek drew me to it. I wanted a longer blade with the same slim profile. The third problem was the fragile tip. I have bent the tip on numerous occasions and usually just bend it back. Not sure how long that will keep going before it completely breaks off.

So, my question is, what is your opinion on the shallot? It seems to me like the answer to my problems. I know it has a longer blade and im thrilled kershaw realized it doesnt need a lock. I dont know whether the tip is more reinforced though. If you guys have any opinion on the shallot please let me know.

I havent had the problems that you have had with your leek but I know what you are talking about. I have a composite shallot with a ZDP-189 cutting edge and I absolutely love it. ZDP-189 is a harder steel and it is more difficult to sharpen yourself but it holds an edge great. It is also expensive so that is a downside. I have had my shallot for almost a year and I have no complaints. It is one of kershaw most ergonomic handles and feels great in your hand. If you like the leek you will love the shallot!

Cool thanks. I see you also have the Kershaw Random. I love that knife and wish I had one. The reverse tanto is so cool!!
The Shallot is a nice design. I bought a black serrated one right when I first saw them on sale.

I have not had any problems with the strength of the tip. It seems stronger then the one on any of my Spyderco Militarys.

The blade is nice and long. The Shallot does not have a lock and it has never come open on me at all either.

The blade is a bit heavier than the Leek, and so it actually comes open kind of slowly. This is not a problem for me though.

The only thing that I think could make the Shallot better would be thumbstuds (it doesent have any as you can see by the picture below).
Thanks Nick. Im glad you pointed out the lack of thumb studs. I had yet to notice that. I'll keep that in mind, not that it bothers me. My Kershaw Junkyard Dog doesnt have thumbstuds either...must be a Kershaw thing.
i think the leek really has only two uses, either a letter opener or an emergency dagger. i will let you guess what i use mine for, and to give you a hint, i just throw away my bills. ha ha.
i love the looks of the composite shallot. what do you know about the cpm-s110v shallot. i heard its hard to sharpen, but from what the crucible websit says its a superior steel than s30v. hell i might just order both a composite and cpm-s110v one.
