iKC Member in Need Request #10 - Colonial Lock Back Folder

The Need

Similar to my first request, please take a look at this and the other postings I have similar to this one and share with me what you know about it. My goal is to use the information you provide to properly market and sell these knives to get a reasonable sale price while letting the buyer enjoy the full value of the piece.

Colonial Folder – What I Think I Know

This is what I believe to be true so far about this knife:

  • It’s a lock back folder
  • Scales look to be blue-green Delrin
  • Only markings is what is pictured
  • Knife is 3" closed; 5.25" opened

What I want to Know

Based on the bullet info above and judging the best you can from the photos, I would like to know the following:

  • Estimate year of knife manufacture?
  • Are the scales Delrin?
  • Is this a true Colonial knife or a wanna-be?
  • Are the blades Carbon steel or badly pitted SS?
  • Should I clean & polish it or leave it as is?
  • What, in your opinion, is the value of the knife?
  • What, in your opinion, is a good sale price?

Please feel free to ask me questions, request additional photos, or whatever in order to assist you in your evaluations. Please also feel free to correct my understandings with additional facts, as I want the best info I can get to support the sale.

Thank you for your comments and assistance – it is greatly appreciated!

< $1.00 on the table says a wife buy's it for her husband or boyfriend! >

Husband or boyfriend?  Well if she buys a good one for her boyfriend make sure you also have some piece of junk she can buy for her husband!

thanks for silver coated interpretation lars

Lol, of course not I value Tobias opinion.  Now that I see what you are doing, you may just clean them yourself and shine them up. sounds like an interesting marketing plan.

B T W, that story was true, and at the time I was annoyed that he told me he would have paid more, but now, much older, I doubt he would have he was just full of it and being a bonehead. lol

And i too found a lot of sound advice in what Michael said and value his opinion!  It really comes down to what you plan to do!

Lars,

This really is an interesting discussion and I find your marketing strategy awesome!

Thanks Jan...just don't be the wife that buys it! If after you see the final product and you just can't live without one of my boxes...I'll make one just for you! I just don't think I could stomach the thought that you bought a cheap knife just to get a super cool Polish box!

But if you do buy it...I'll split the dollar with ya!  LoL!

Well now that ypu have our wonderfull and semi educated advise I think you should just send me the Solingen Bowie and Send Tobias the Western Bowie for our consulting fees, sounds about right dont you think Tobias?  Ill be waiting by the mailbox.

Sounds extremely fair to me, Michael!

Oh...Oh...kick him when he's down!

LOL!  now that is creative marketing

Capitalistic extortionists...I hate it when others use my techniques against me!  :-)

what you have is the model CY15

with 1075 high carbon steel, value-not too high since over 1/2 million were manufactured- however, as far as knives go, this is an American made knife, made with U.S. Steel,  and even though the value may only be $20.00 its a heck of a knife for $20.,00- in fact, Colonial Knife products increase in value-over time- especially since this knife retailed for under $14.00 back in the 1980's- so you made money, got yourself and American made knife that today would cost close to $70.00 dollars or more-the tang stamp was changed from "Coyote" to "Colonial" this was my idea back in the 80's since we were selling large quantities I thought it would be a good idea for all to see that the knife came from Colonial Knife-

hope this helps

if at the Blade show, stop by my booth NO. 635 and say hello

Best
