The online community of knife collectors, A Knife Family Forged in Steel
I know I gotta few knives for Christmas this year. Did anyone else? The one below came from my Cats. I kinda feel guilty. All I got them was some catnip.
I'm not sure how long Rapala has been making these knives but I never saw them until a month or so ago . This is the Skinner in their Classic Birch Wood Collection.
I really dig the blade profile with the swedge.
A nice snug fit in the sheath. The sheath has a hard plastic liner in the blade area to prevent puncturing.
The blade is 420 German Steel. I wished they would've used something better. It has rat-tail tang that passes all the way through the handle.
Above the blade thickness compared to a Rapala 4 inch fillet knife. Below a size comparison of the two knives
The Description from their website reads:
Designed for skinning game, the narrow tip with a wide curved belly allows a running sweep for quick and accurate skinning. Spine side cutting edge allows precise work in tight corners.
• Heavy duty ideal for skinning game
• Curved blade with narrow tip ideal for tight work
• Razor-sharp blade of German 420 Stainless Steel
• Classic Rapala birch handle
• Through tang construction
• Genuine leather sheath with belt loop
• Molded one-piece scabbard for safe storage
Below is picture of the Rapal compared to a Bear & Son Sharpfinger style skinner, a Boker 155 B&T and my Buck Clear Water Bait Knife. The buck is my usual outdoor EDC knife as I'm usually out doors with a rod and reel. The Boker is often carried when backpacking but not fishing.
I'll give this much for the Rapala. It looks nice and it feels pretty good in the hand. Still, the handle could be just a tad larger in my opinion.

!!! .. Oh yeah .. !!!

.
The kit was from my wife.
The burgandy linen micarta .. from my daughter.
.
I've done one of these before. The old single spring version.
.
I did that one up left handed for a south paw brother.
!!! .. This one .. I'm doing for myself .. !!!
.
This is the newer 2-spring version.
It's designed & made in the Czech Republic.
You can find it referred to on other knife threads as the "Workhorse".
It's like comparing an AK-47 to an early version M-16
One can literally drop this in the mud .. squeeze mud into it picking it up ..AND.. it'll still fire.
The springs are field replaceable.
For that matter .. they can be removed for legal purposes. In under a minute .. you've just a lever-lock.
The stamping has changed on the newer ones. Below the standard encircled Mikov (in script) is now stamped "KIT".
I haven't had a chance yet , Jan .. to check on a date for this. But, do have a reliable source ..just.. not the time .. yet ....
The obverse side is still stamped with the country of origin.
.
The linen micarta .. durable .. & .. finishes out so sweetly.
The deep purple .. a personal favorite.

So YES .. my Santas were good to me.
Santa made a pact at my house this year. Sell the rest of the barlows before buying anything! We were so very blessed the entire year that we felt Santa could take a break from us :)
That means I want to see EVERYONES Christmas haul!!!! PLEASE, I am dying to see what everyone got LOL!
Nice Haul, Charles.
I got this nice Tuna Valley fish knife. I had shown it to my wife, and said it would make a nice gift for me. Later on I noticed that the knife was sold and no longer listed on the dealer website, so I got my hopes up. On Christmas morning I opened some gifts and the knife was not one of them, so I was slightly bummed. Later on that day we went to my Mother's to do a little family Christmas time, and she handed me a large microwave sized box. Inside it was another box, which contained another box, and finally I saw the familiar tube shape and I was very excited. Sneaky women.
Carl, I'm very jealous. What a great catch! (both the knife and wife who got it for you!)
