Live & Learn ... Ordering off the Internet

I ordered this little knife Oct. 11th.  It was a pink one I hadn’t seen before … a lady John Deere medium stockman.  It arrived in the mail today.  Pretty green tin,  pretty velvet carrying case … pink jigged bone han … oh wait … is that a crack???   It didn't feel like a crack but it sure looked like a crack.  I made a couple of phone calls.  Monday it heads to Case Repairs in PA ...

now I know first hand why it's important to see an actual picture of the knife I'm ordering and not the stock one ... because it didn't have any cracks :)

Here's the update.  On Oct. 17th I put the knife in the mail.  On Oct. 25th I got a post card saying it had been received and it would be approx. 6 - 8 wks.  for servicing.  And today ... Oct. 28th the dogs went nuts & the UPS guy arrived with my new knife.  Sooo ... looks like WR Case really does bend over backwards to make things right :)  I'm a happy camper.

Well, If you can figure out what you want you could always call our master dealer.  Harveys Hardware here in Florida.  He would be happy to inspect before shipping, he runs an old fashion hardware store and does business the old ways.  Wish you would give the Great Eastern Geppetto a try, I know you would like it.

Thanks for the tips.  I've got a better idea of what to watch for.  This knife did come from a master dealer & I've noticed quite a few use the stock photos.  When I called he said they didn't inspect every knife.  Next time before I order I'm going to ask if they will inspect the knife before they ship it.

If I'm ordering off ebay I want to be able to see the knife I'm buying & it has to have the zoom function.  I was all excited about one I found & a quick look with the zoom showed that gap between bolster & the bone you mentioned Ron.  I was glad I looked.  I wouldn't have been a happy camper.

I think that we all have similar stories.

I keep a box on my computer desk.  Its a knife that I ordered from a company that was very insensative to the problems with the knife, that I addressed.

I keep it there as a reminder.

peggy that does look like a nice case knife.but thats like the blog i just wrote if you want to look at it i said it seems so much better like the way it was done in the old days where you could go to your local hardware store and be able to feel them and handle them and look at them in person it was so much better.please let us know how it goes .

Yes Jan,  it's a dent & from it's position it looks like it's what caused the crack ... it shows up clearer in the photo than on the knife.  I mentioned it when I talked to the lady at Case & put a copy of the closeup in with the knife & paperwork.   The sleeve and the tin are both perfect ... not a scratch on them.

Peggy,

Sorry you had this experience, its a shame.  The lady John Deere does look like nice knife though.  Keep us up on the progress for the repair.  I am with you, I would rather have it replaced.  Is that a small dent in the bolster @ the crack?
