Trying to ID makerof this knife?
Hello, everyone I have just joined the club, and rying to get some help in trying to find out who was the possible maker of this knife that I just purchased, I hope someone can help. It an Antique WYETH Hardware , SAINT JOSEPH, MO. has three blades . main blade , front side is stamped WYETH H D W ST JOSEPH, MO. back side is stamped MADE IN ENGLAND main blade is etched BEST ENGLISH MAKE the other two blades are stamped WYETH HDW M'F"G CO. ST JOSPH, MO. I understand it was made in England, but the etching BEST ENGLISH MAKE is what I can't understand. Hopeing someone can shed some light on this. Thank You Vince .

e-bay almost wouldn't let me see a pic because the auction ended.
I've seen several gentlemans knives (large and small blades with a nail file) within the photo archives here at iKC. I don't remember any with bolsters like that though.
The ONLY referance to a tangstamp with "WYETH HDW M'F"G CO. ST JOSPH, MO." that I could find on google was for a straight razor.
(Check item SR16).
There was a discussion on "BladeForums",might be of intrest.
Tidbit on "Wyeth"; William and Eliza Wyeth moved to St. Joseph in 1860, and William soon developed his small wholesale-retail business into the prosperous Wyeth Hardware and Manufacturing Company and Wyeth Saddle Factory. (From info on the Wyeth Tootle Mansion.)
More on Wyeth Hardware and Saddelry catalogs on the web. (but I gotta go).
Sorry I couldnt narrow anything down, for you. maybe another member has some information for you.

J.J. I got lucky and got in contact accidentley with a person that was raised right at ST. Joseph Mo. and was a friend of the Wyeth's family and was a knife person, he told me all about the Wyeth's knives, and about who made a lot of them, he said that the used 6 different stamps while they were in business. mine was made between 1860 and 1900. here is some of what he said about it, the steel warrented steel blades came from England after 1890 and that is when the law was in effect that steel blades had to be stamped where the came from.and this knife was made on contract at the Waterville cutlery co. in conn.the steel came from England.but the also contracted a lot of knives from many other companys like Uticaand a co. that also was in ST. Joe. called "CUTINO"CUT. CO. which later left there and re located in KC. They use to make all of WYETH's light duty knives for them. stamped them and put them together, before the relocated. he new everything about the hardware co. knives. well thats what he has told me. I am going to go thru the notes that I was trying to write down, while we were talking , trying to d code them not look like chicken scratching. If I get anything more I will let you know, Kinda Interesting Don't You Think.

Once you get them in order, be sure to include them with some photos (guess you can tell we like photos at iKC).
It's good to be able to have a history with knives like this.

When I get the knife and get some pictures of it, he wants me to send photos, also, and we are going to talk again, and I will get some more facts, and make some more notes, then we can have some very sought after info. about the way they were doing thinks. He did tell me the dates of the co. when it was in business, opened 1950 went belly up in 1973. he new this from a person tha had been working at the time, and he was there when thet had the auction. will talk to you later. Craig, I will share the informationfor others, when I finish getting everything put together, I have more questions to ask of this person, about the WYETH"S hardware co. knives, and the one of mine that I was wanting to get ID . after I get info. and pictures , I am going to have to have someone from the club to help me get info. and pictures posted, I am not a computer person,not very good at it, barley trying to figure out getting around here, I have never been a member of any knife club site.And yes getting this information from a real person, is very interesting and exciting.
